Guest guest
600 mg in one dose is WAY too much ALA even for a huge adult and one needs to dose frequently to avoid redistribution. Bet this nutritionist has NO idea that people with mercury amalgams dental fillings should avoid it completely. 1/8-1/2 mg per lb of kid is an appropriate dose and it needs to be given every 3 hours during the day and every 4 hours at night for 3 days in a row " on " and as many off. It is safe for kids if given on Andy's protocol IF the kid has NO mercury amalgam dental fillings and is not high in copper. Double or triple check anything this nutritionist tells you. Sounds like he has just enough info to be dangerous in some cases. ALA chelates mercury from the body and brain and arsenic. Sounds like the nutritionist is talking about the SCD (specific carbohydrates diet) others correct me if I'm wrong. I think the idea behind that is to starve out the yeast since sugar and carbs feed yeast. The DAN! probably didn't recommend it because he or she doesn't know about it, doesn't know about safe dosing, or knows he or she won't make a profit on it. Perhaps he or she knows that a lot of people chelate without a doc on ALA and wants you to continue office visits. S S My DAN doc has never mentioned this to me but of course I knew about
it through this group. I guess I just assumed it was another type of
chelator. I have been using DMPS in transdermal form for 3 months.

I was shocked today as I had an appointment with a Board Certified
nutritionist who owns the local health food store and he mentioned
me using Alpha Lipoic Acid...I was like...you mean ALA? He said to
give my son one 600mg Vcap before breakfast...does this sound safe?
Is it ok to use with dmps? Should I work up to this amount? He said
it helps the body produce it's own glutathione and is good for liver
support...I am thinking why wouldnt my DAN doc reccommend this to me
to try as my first chelator? Is it safe for our children? I'd love
any advice/input anyone has? Have children recovered using this?

I was also sad to hear his advice on diet...eliminate all sugars,
including fruit, no fructose, maltrose, rice, potatoes, bread,
wheat, rye, barley, oats, dairy, fried foods, no juice...his diet
made my DAN diet look like a walk in the park!

He did reccommend the diet for a month before I start the grapefruit
seed extract and aloe vera gel as an antiflamitory, this I have
heard on this group. Then a probiotic...he is just starting to help
me with my son...I have not had much luck with the nystatin, ampho
B, or the sporanox for elimination of yeast. I think it's definitely
the diet making the problem linger...wish me luck!
_______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! People who are NOT mercury toxic could take high doses of ALA I guess. It is true that it is a powerful antioxidant. Unfortunately people who are toxic have to follow a very strict protocol since ALA will also chelate metals.
Guest guest
DO NOT give 600mg of ALA to anyone!!! That is such an incredibly high dose!!! My son weighs about 40 pounds and I have never given him more than 20mg and that is because he tolerates it really well. Correct dosing would be to start with 1/8-1/4 mg per pound of body weight every 3 hours (can go every 4 hours at night) around the clock for 3 days and then resting for a couple days. ALA does support liver function but at high doses that are not close together you are going to pull a lot of metal and simple redistribute it throughout the body causing many health and behavioral problems. ALA is a wonderful chelator, it is just important to use it correctly. It is the only chelator that will cross into the brain and get the metals out of there. Yes, kids have recovered using this. We use it in the above protocol with amazing results. The diet sounds too harsh. I definitely recommend cutting out processed and unnatural foods and ingredients. Sugar in excess is bad all around. Unless you are having a yeast issue fruits are not bad. Too much juice is unnecessary but better than soda...water is best Food colorings, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and trans fats shouldn't be in anyone's diet. White rice and flours should be minimal and brown rice and wheat breat instead. All that said, sometimes a good cheeseburger is just fine! The idea is to clean up the diet as much as possible. Nobody is perfect and that is just fine. If you can eliminate a large percentage you are doing great. That leaves the body better able to handle the bad stuff when we just can't resist. Okay, just saw the yeast mentioned...still reeling over the suggested 600mg ALA! Grapefruit seed extract is great for yeast. So is Candex and No Phenol enzymes. Both of those are more gentle but effective. I think Biotin is also good for yeast??? I would limit sugars as best as possible, especially the processed kinds, juice as well really. I think some say pear juice is okay. Depends on the kiddo. Some of us rub oil of oregano on the bottoms of our kids feet. Chelation is good at causing yeast. I have to get to work but definitely read the FAQ section of this group. You are likely going to get a lot of response! Wishing you well, son2recover <michelle.hovan@...> wrote: My DAN doc has never mentioned this to me but of course I knew about it through this group. ALA chelation was one of the most important steps to recover my kids, altho they needed much more than chelation for full recovery. > I was also sad to hear his advice on diet...eliminate all sugars, > including fruit, no fructose, maltrose, rice, potatoes, bread, > wheat, rye, barley, oats, dairy, fried foods, no juice...his diet > made my DAN diet look like a walk in the park! Was there any specific reason to remove all those foods? In general, you should not remove *any* foods without a specific reason for doing so. >>I think it's definitely > the diet making the problem linger...wish me luck! Guest guest
Thanks for the info...my son is just under 30lbs...I am sooooo glad I asked. The other problem is that it is just so gritty...how do you get it down? He actually coughed (as did I) when I mixed it with apple juice.... > > > My DAN doc has never mentioned this to me but of course I knew about
> it through this group. Guest guest
Thank you all for the warning...I think I will return it (the grit made me cough horribly) and await to discuss with my DAN doc...I was getting ready to switch to DMSA and I am not sure how ALA fits into that...I know the nutritionist is great with yeast...not much on chelation....I guess asking you guys is the best of both worlds...thanks again! > My DAN doc has never mentioned this to me but of course I knew about > it through this group. Guest guest
, Just popping in here. If you are saying the ALA is hard to get down, you can try tablets. I had the same trouble with the capsule ALA (coughing and throat irritation). I switched to tablets: crush them and mix them on a spoon with some applesauce or something (you'll have to cut the tabs to the right dose). Still not a pleasant supplement, but tolerable. I make sure he can wash it down well with a favorite drink. Pam > > > > > > My DAN doc has never mentioned this to me but of course I knew > about
> > it through this group. Guest guest
I use fresh cheese (it's like yogurt except thicker) to get the chelators in during the day. I covers them very well. You could also use yogurt, or if you are GFCF make a GFCF pudding. That way you could used xylitol and avoid the sugar too.
