Guest guest
Jam : this is not typical. At least I don't have this experience. Where are you doing your shopping? At some fancy gourmet store? I find my food bills to be about the same. I would imagine the time involved will be lessened when you gain more experience. How about some details. What did you buy? Caviar? Can you relate any reason (s) why it took so long? Did you go to several stores or what? on 9/20/2002 11:29 AM, ran7972002 at Jammer7@... wrote: > I'm not so sure about this new adventure of mine. Guest guest
Cheer up. We've all been there. You're on a learning curve. Give yourself 30 days and you'll find yourself doing everything more efficiently. It actually becomes fun to find your own ways of making the CRON life easier to do. As for doing it less expensively, remember that the SAD diet ain't cheap either, especially in terms of the health consequences. I just took a shopping list that I had made from my "Perfect Day" post and did my first healthy grocery shopping. It took me like an hour and a half just to shop !It will probably take me another few hours in prep time today when adding up all the meals. The bill was over $80. for an amount of food that will probably on last about 4 or 5 days of eating this way.I'm not feeling real confident that this is going to be a real long lasting adventure for me.Any suggestions from you old CRONIES ? Guest guest
Well I guess that you were not shopping at Whole Foods (Fresh Fields) or you never would have made it out the door for $80. As far as the shopping time goes, that will improve with practice. I once heard someone say that if you limit your shopping to the outer isles of the store, you would live longer (fresh stuff generally is located there)! Also you will find that once you get some favorite nutritious recipes that can be prepared and frozen, you will spend less time in the store. With regard to the cost, well I guess you just have to make a conscious decision that you are investing in your health and that in the long run, no better investment can be made in your life. Chele and I always had a house rule that there are two things that are exempt from financial scrutiny and guilt and they are books and high quality food. If you are one who dines out frequently, you can cut back a little on that entertainment and invest the savings into your more nutritious shopping adventures. Don't give up yet...stick with it for a set period of time, like six months and see how well you adapt. I wish you well! Guest guest
PS Jam. I forgot to mention that when you ask for advice from "OLD" CRONIES, you won't usually get much response. You see to us "old" is in excess of 105 years of age...which is one more reason for you to hang in there! Guest guest
Jam: In the " CR Made Easy " file we also discuss a " lazy " way of doing CRON - ie by buying " Healthy Choice " meals and twiddling with them a bit (adding a bit of healthy fat, extra frozen veggies, skipping the dessert). This will help prep and shopping time, but of course this doesn't help costwise; but you could stock up on the Healthy Choices during sales, assuming you have some freezer space. If you factor in what you were spending for junk food, Mcs, snacks, sodas, beer or whatever, I'm sure the cost isn't that much (if any) more. In fact if you just follow the 5 steps in " CR Made Easy " you'll do much better. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Any changes made will improve your health. on 9/20/2002 11:29 AM, ran7972002 at Jammer7@... wrote: > I'm not so sure about this new adventure of mine. Guest guest
It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I'm afraid you don't know me very well,............YET. In order for me to believe your statement, I'd have to spend thousands of dollars in counseling fees. : )

Did you go to several stores or what? I'm sure a lot of the time consumption was takin' up by the fact that I just never really shopped that much before. I used to buy most of my meals ready made or out of a can. (Have I told you yet how much I HATE preparing food?). Anyway, I wasn't really all that familiar with the store and had to be looking at my list all the time and such. I'm sure I can get this time down eventually. Also, I didn't really look at my watch or anything. There's a small chance I exaggerated the time spent. Maybe shopping hours are sort of like dog years. : )) (Have I told you how much I hate shopping yet?) As far as the cost, I really only bought everything I needed in order to make the meals discussed in the " perfect day " post. Some items like olive and oil and such will last quite a while so it shouldn't be quite as expensive next time around................I hope.
