Jo: a hearty welcome. When you newbies delurk, we can get to know you!

Also you all have a lot of good info to share. Wonder if my health food

store sells plain kefir? Now you have me scratching my head.

And of course it's great to hear that you're enjoying the group!

HI, I too live in Manhattan and know the cooking/space issue all too well. Re:

store bought kefir - There's another brand (the name eludes me at the moment)

that makes a nonfat, no sugar plain variety (not Helios) that is really good. I

know they have it at Healthy Pleasures on University and 12th. It's not THAT

tart and easily sweetened with fresh fruit. The amount of sugar in the regular

brand puts me off.

The store-bought plain kefir available at the Whole Foods supermarket

chain here in Northern California is the " Lifeway " brand

<http://www.kefir.com/>. It is labeled, " Real Lowfat Kefir, Plain

(original flavor) " .

Ingredients: Cultured Lowfat Milk, Nonfat Milk, Guar Gum, Vitamin A

Palmitate, Vitamin D3.

Serving Size: 1 cup

Fat Cal.: 20

Total fat: 2.5g

Vitamin A: 10%

Vitamin D: 25%

I tend to blend it with a very-ripe frozen banana and various berries

(strawberries, blueberries, blackberries) and have it for breakfast

every second or third day along with a whole-grain bagel spread with

peanut, almond, or soy-nut butter. I think it tastes great that way,

no added sweetener (except for the fruit).
