Hi All,

The new issue of August Am J Clin Nutr 2002;76 came in. It is not in

Medline yet. I attached the list of titles. PDFs of abstracts or full

texts are off-list available.

I will get back to the individual papers I liked more later. For now, some

quick takes:

Regarding “Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase: a link between folate and

riboflavin?”,

the considerable % of CRONies who are vegetarians and at increased risk

maybe should beware that 10-15% of the population are at increased risk of

homocysteine imbalance due to alteration of this enzyme.

Regarding “Association of the fatty acid profile of serum lipids with

glucose and insulin metabolism during 2 fat-modified diets in subjects with

impaired glucose tolerance”

I thought you might enjoy the details, especially Dean and maybe :

” 31 subjects with impaired glucose tolerance were randomly counseled to

consume the Mono [40% fat; 11%, 19%, and 8% of energy as saturated,

monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (S:M:P), respectively] or

the Poly (34% fat; S:M:P of 11%:10%:10%) diet for 8 wk. …. at baseline and

at 8 wk.

Results: At baseline, a higher glucose effectiveness (SG) was associated

with higher proportions of oleic (r = 0.57, P = 0.04) and linolenic (r =

0.64, P = 0.01) acids in phospholipids. An increase in the proportions of

oleic and linolenic acids in phospholipids was associated with a decrease in

fasting plasma glucose [r = -0.53 (P = 0.002) and r = -0.47 (P = 0.009),

respectively]. An increase in the SG was associated with an increase in the

proportion of oleic acid (r = 0.55, P = 0.004) and with a decrease in that

of arachidonic acid (r = -0.40, P = 0.04) in phospholipids.

Conclusions: The beneficial changes in fasting plasma glucose and in the SG

during the Mono diet were associated with alterations in the proportions of

oleic, linolenic, and arachidonic acids in phospholipids.”

Regarding “Whole-grain intake is favorably associated with metabolic risk

factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the Framingham

Offspring Study”

Whole grains are good.

Regarding:

Longitudinal changes in body composition in older men and women: role of

body weight change and physical activity,

The study was nice IMO in showing the risk of losing fat-free mass despite

exercise during aging for those who lose weight. It seemed to me that they

lost a greater % in fat mass, though.

“fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) …. sports and recreational activity

(SRA) of 53 men and 78 women with a mean (±SD) initial age of 60.7 ± 7.8

y ….

Results: FFM decreased in men (2.0% per decade) but not in women, whereas FM

increased similarly in both sexes (7.5% per decade). Levels of SRA decreased

more in men than in women over the follow-up period. Baseline age and level

of SRA were inversely and independently associated with changes in FM in

women only. Neither age nor level of SRA was associated with changes in FFM

in men or women. Weight-stable subjects lost FFM. FFM accounted for 19% of

body weight in those who gained weight, even in the presence of decreased

levels of SRA. Loss of FFM (33% of body weight) was pronounced in those who

lost weight, despite median SRA levels >4184 kJ/wk.”
