back in previous posts from greg watson (i MISS those posts!) there was a

link about the benefits of this cocktail to a study that showed benefits.

i'm not able to find it just now, but memory says it increased glutathione

production in the liver. more importantly these studies showed a correlation

between dietary ala and an increasing ala concentration in the mitochondria

of the liver cells. i was less convinced about the carnatine connection.

this paper, other posts by greg, and Dr. 's mention of it on p 175

(BT120YD) was enough for me to be a believer. for about 5 months now i take

300 mg ala daily (100 here, 100 there, 100 before bed) and have Never felt a

zing, zip or a pop. it's one of those areas of CRON i have given into belief

that some of this stuff works under the covers. and i suppose some day i'll

get my glutathione level tested, even though it could be the CRONning and

not the ala per se.

so here's a vote to stick with it and indulge in the research others are

tracking as well.

enjoy!

Tom: thanks for reminding me of the Walford reference on pg 175 of BT120YD.

He also mentions in that reference:

Feeding old rats lipoic acid plus acetyl-L-carnitine for a period of weeks

restored mitochondrial function and ambulatory activity and lowered the

level of oxidants. So Walford does include L-carnitine in his statement.

I followed the regimen for a while including (co-Q10 and Creatine). My perception when I began was that I did perceive an improved energy level and sense of well being.

When I ran out I decided to wait a few days and look for the effect to go away.... still waiting.

: are you saying then that your sense of well being was probably NOT

due to the supplements?

I have no idea.... I perceived a boost when I began the regimen.. I didn't perceive a drop when I stopped. There could be several explanations i.e. 1) Positive impact was placebo, 2) positive effect could have persistence due to residual levels of various actors with decay so gradual as to not be perceived as threshold event, 3) Positive effect may have already tapered off, 4) I'm just weird, 5) other...

I prefer to limit my posts to what I feel I know or understand. Since abandoning the supplements I haven't perceived a specific loss of energy or well being. That's my experience, I'll allow others to draw (leap to) their own conclusions.

While I don't believe in ignoring signals our bodies give us.. at

the same time I concur with this message that most of our decisions

have to be made on the best knowledge/research we have not simply on

our perception of whether it is doing us good or not. I like that

phrase " stuff works under the covers " !

I recently exchanged messages with my brother who had mentioned he

was losing weight rather rapidly..with diet and exercise program.

When I cautioned slower weight loss ..he countered with how much

better he is feeling (not surprising when you shed excess weight). My

reply was not to lean to heavily on this perception...since sometimes

by the time our body sends us clues to what is happening it is too

late to reverse the damage.

I consider supplements more as a type of insurance. If I take a

supplement and " feel the effect " I get worried, because either my state

was bad to begin with or this supplement is " too strong " .

You can have at least two types of attitude towards supplements:

1. The scientific attitude: read all the relevant experiments etc. and

decide. BTW, the latest experiment with rats and Alpha Lipoic Acid/L

carnitine combo use R-Lipoic acid and not racemic-lipoic acid which is

what you can get over the counter. Maybe the R-Lipoic will do the trick

for you...

2. The religious way. You just believe it's good for you. Don't under

estimate the power of suggestion! I'm sure you believe CR is good

despite the lack of human evidence... :-)
