Guest guest
You may be ablet o get one generation from the kefir you buy, but most of the time I have heard you really cannot and it would be a waste of time. Grace, a Augustine I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive. I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough ''Hello's " to get you through the final goodbye. --anonymous ----- Original Message ----- From: givemeamomenttothink Sent: Monday, June 24, 2002 1:45 PM Subject: Kefir I'm still buying ready-made Kefir from the health food store. Can I just make Kefir by adding some of the store bought Kefir to raw milk? If so, how much Kefir would I add to the milk? Thanks. Guest guest
The kefir in the store doesn't have the full complement of organisms that are in real kefir. You need to get some kefir grains from someone. Someone on this list sent me mine, for which I do again thank them. They are still going strong - in fact I am just reminded that I have some kefir sitting on the counter that needs some attention before I go to bed. I think I will have some excess grains before too long to send you if you want to send me your address. Getting them can be an issue, but once you have them you are set (*unless you bake them in the oven* :-) Once yours start going, share them with as many people as you can get interested so that if you do destroy yours somehow you always have a backup ... > Heidi Schuppenhauer Trillium Custom Software Inc. heidis@... You have to get kefir grains and culture it with them. Raw milk is best if you have a supply - either cow or goat. I'm waiting for a friend to send me grains, and heard of someone in my area who makes kefir and hope to get a grain from them. As someone mentioned there's a " Kefir_making " group on and the moderator has a great website with lots of kefir recipes. You can make kefir with fruit (as one CR enthusiast does) which also reduces the carbs, as with regular kefir, and with herbs to make your own bubbly herbal infusions, and with grapes to make a kefir " wine " . Kefir is simply a fermentated milk beverage pure and simple. If one enjoys the taste of buttermilk then I would think kefir withour sugar will be palatable. I can drink it without sucralose, but I find the sucralose, with fruit, gives it almost a desert quality and helps keep the sweet tooth fairies at bay. With all the osteo worries with CRON my daily kefir helps with peice of mind, sort of an insurance policy.
