Hi, All:

This is my report on the August 31, 2002 CR luncheon gathering in

the Southern California area.

Warren organized the meeting. We met in a restaurant midway

between Los Angeles and Orange County. There were four attendees.

I attribute the unusually low turnout to it being a holiday

weekend. It was a small group but an animated one!

The four CR folks attending were:

Adolfo

Joanne S.

Mike O'Gara

Warren

It was interesting to see the differences in " eating out at a

restaurant " habits. Some of us ate nothing. Some ate sparingly.

Some ate a lot (I plead guilty to that one).

Many interesting topics were discussed, too many to remember them

all! These come to mind:

We discussed being thin and ways of making CR easier to live with.

We talked about keeping warm in the wintertime, shoe pads to protect

bony feet, dealing with " Oh, you're too thin! " comments and such.

Joanne mentioned that she'd recently had a DEXA test, and found it

indicated she may have osteopenia. As she is fairly new to CR she

felt this condition predated her beginning CR.

Warren has also had a DEXA test, indicating osteoporosis. Adolfo

and Mike have not been tested.

Adolfo gave us many insights regarding the use (and misuse) of

traditional Chinese herbal remedies. Many have garnered a reputation

over centuries of improving various aspects of health when applied

properly. He gave us examples of how these are often improperly

applied as " broad-spectrum " health aids in modern times. And often

not at all properly matched to the specific problem being dealt with

as they were when used by traditional practitioners in the past.

MIke reviewed the results of his self-experiments with NtBHA (an

antioxidant) and generic ALT-711 (a purported A.G.E. crosslink

breaker). The conclusion: Generally favorable results, but nothing

exceptionally dramatic. Another few good arrows in the quiver.

We also discussed low-calorie sweeteners and various low-calorie

concoctions. Warren is very knowledgeable about those, of course.

He's become a virtual one-man distributor of Sucralose and many

unique flavorings. Adolfo has been helping Warren pack and ship

orders recently, which has certainly been a big help to him.

during the luncheon:

Participants, starting at left: Adolfo , Joanne S., Mike

O'Gara, Warren .

We hope to see more CR practitioners from Los Angeles, Orange

County, and San Diego at the next meeting!
