Guest guest
It’s been interesting to see what folks eat for breakfast, as it sets the tone for the rest of the day. Several times a week I make a hot oatmeal, using rolled oats. It’s a Zone thing. I have an insta-hot water dispenser (the world’s best kitchen gadget) and put some of this near boiling water in a bowl with some oats to soak while I chop up a couple of dried apricots or fresh apple. Or just use blueberries, if available. Then I add lots of cinnamon and put it in the microwave for a minute. A sprinkle of protein powder and a shot of refrigerated flax seed oil provide the finishing touch. Sometimes I add nuts or wheat germ. A little sweetener is sometimes needed, depending on the fruits used. Occasionally I “poach” an egg using a microwave egg cooker and put that on top of whole grain toast with the thinnest film of Smart Balance. This is a breakfast that lasts — I don’t get any mid-morning slump or hunger. I usually avoid boxed cereals because I get hungry again too soon. They set me up for a mean sugar bounce, even cereals with a relatively low sugar content. The once-in-a-blue-moon breakfast treat I love [warning: not a CR breakfast] is whole grain toast with a bit of almond butter and a few of Melba’s (my mom) fig preserves.
