Guest guest
Dominick: Welcome to the CR Support Group. Where have you heard (or have you?) that CRON causes depression? AFAIK, there's no connection to CRON. Since mental illness (including depression) is a major cause of illness in society (I believe it's one in 10 people) we have had some members with these kinds of problem before they started CRONING. There have also been some discussions about bipolar disorder. You might try searching " omegabrite " in the archives. That's a brand of fish oil that some members take to help. However most good brands should be just as good as the expensive omegabrite. Of course exercise is also a good antidote to depression. I occasionally feel down when I haven't had a good nights sleep and although I eat lots of omega 3 fish, I take extra fish oil during those times. Either it's acting as a placebo or it's helping, but I do feel better when I take the extra fish oil. on 10/9/2002 1:10 PM, Dominick at deekjb@... wrote: > Hello all, I am considering moving toward a CRON diet but I am > concerned about the possible side effect of depression. Guest guest
Dominick, My husband is prone to depression and while he is not on a complete CRON diet, he tries at least for the ON part. I've been researching various foods that are supposed to help alleviate depression, in addition to other supplements. Today I found the following website, which lists good foods and recipes. They aren't CRON recipes per se, but they do include lots of healthy foods and particularly those with nutrients that aid in depression. http://www.wholehealthmd.com/hk/remedies/disp/1,1459,453,00.html For a more CRON approach, you can substitute some of the carbs, though this particular site lists complex carbs as beneficial for depression. It's a tricky area - there was that book called " Potatoes not Prozac " but potatoes aren't a CRON food. The site lists the following as beneficial in decreasing depression symptoms: Complex carbohydrates, folate (folic acid), magnesium, niacin, omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and tryptophan. We supplement daily with l-Tryptophan, which you can only buy over the net, or by prescription. Tryptophan is that ingredient in turkey that makes you sleepy, and is also found in milk, and... potatoes. 5htp is also sometimes recommended for depression, and it's easier to get, but I wouldn't take it. If you want more on that, send me an offlist email. When my husband eats well, tending toward the CRON diet, and gets regular exercise, he is not depressed really at all. I'm not 100% sure the tryptophan does much, but I'm not giving up on it either. I don't think this is anywhere near an exact science, and I'd appreciate any info others have too --Jo > -----Original Message----- > From: Francesca Skelton > > Dominick: Welcome to the CR Support Group.
