To tell ya the truth, I'm having a very difficult time. I'll go almost a week being all but perfect and then something like last night will happen where I can't keep my car from pulling into 's for some greasy fries and a fat laden single with everything but now today I'll try to get right back on the health wagon. Anyway, your drive to do the healthful thing for yourself after everything you've been thru is very inspiring. Thanks for the introduction ! Guest guest
If you have an overwhelming desire to eat a greaseburger, just do it... what you eat once a week won't kill you. It's what you eat everyday. In fact there has been research done on caloric restriction practiced every other day, with some success... I do not suggest EOD CR for humans but this is all an educated guess at this point. Eat healthy as much of the time as you can. The urges will gradually subside and you taste preferences will shift toward more healthful fare. Guest guest
Jam: you really lifted my spirits today with this post. You sound like a real CRONIE! Don't worry about the occasional " straying " . After a few months on CRON, the greasy food should become a lot less appealing (we can only hope). on 10/5/2002 9:45 AM, ran7972002 at Jammer7@... wrote: > >> as the newest member. Guest guest
Thanks, Suz! It's been really funny here... Instead of saying "I'm starting this today", I'm giving myself a month or two to 'gear up'. I want to set myself up for success, not failure, so I'm playing the tortoise instead of the hare... Due to commuting about 2.5 hr/day, I haven't really cooked for myself in about 3-4 years... When I started checking things on the shelf & in the fridge, I found that almost everything was totally outdated (I.e. wheat germ expired in Jan 01!!!) So, I went through the cupboards, fridge, pantry, and took about 7 grocery bags to my best girlfriend, her hubby & 4 kids.. Got the temptation out of the way & made room for all the good stuff! Made the big salad that's in the text on page 220. Had my first "on day", then two off as I reloaded my stores... Then 3 on days, 1 off for a birthday party, and 4 more on on... I really like what DrRW says on pg 221, when he says to aim for 9 on, maybe 1 off.... So, that's my original goal! And, minus 3 pounds in 3 weeks...that's about the rate I'd like, slow, sure, minimal free radicals in the process... Gotta go cook my red beans & rice! Hi Marsha, and welcome. Thanks for coming forward and introducing yourself. This really helps the group as a whole (hint hint to other newcomers!) I like your attitude! (Sounds like Rocky has it made in the shade.) You've already done the things we normally suggest that new people do--read the book(s), check the files, etc. You obviously have a good abundance of wisdom to share with us. I look forward to hearing more from you as your CR journey proceeds. Hugs Suz
Guest guest
Yup - the I need a basic load of GREASE craze! When that hits me, I go to the fridge & get a tsp of flax seed oil... very good for ya, especially for breast health ( & guys do get the darn C there, too). Usually no more than one tsp per day... Or, I may even take 1/4 piece of Ezekiel bread or a whole wheat pita, and dip in the fresh pepper or garlic dipping oil that I've made with olive oil... Both the oils fill me up a bit, and the craving leaves... Of course, if I'm in the car on the bypass with a grease joint every 50 feet or so..... I just ask for extra napkins!!! And, welcome to you, too... Good luck! Marsha -----Original Message-----From: ran7972002 [mailto:Jammer7@...]Sent: Saturday, October 05, 2002 9:46 AM Subject: [ ] Re: Hi! Guest guest
>Hi Marsha, and welcome. Thanks for >coming forward and introducing >yourself. This really helps the group as >a whole (hint hint to other newcomers!) Hi Marsha! And congrats on beating the cancer! OK, I haven't introduced myself yet either. My name is Dot and I'm 57 and 5' 6 1/2 " . I have been thin (at times very, very thin) for most of my life, even through three pregnancies, but when I was about 45, my weight suddenly took off, because of a lifestyle change, and I ended up at a whopping 187 pounds last year. I am now at 174 and losing slowly. I'm going for around 110 - 115 pounds. The cooking/eating process has never been a big social deal for me, nor do I live to eat, and the CRON diet is basically the way I eat now, except that I add a lot of sweets, just because they are here in the house. One of my problems in making any change is feeling that I have to have every single duck and all their goslings neatly arranged first. Well, I have done the reading, am about to order the software, and have a menu plan that will be adaptable for a non-CRON husband - so I'm ready! As for exercise, I do a little walking, but am working on some other things, though I am not going to let the lack of perfection in that area stop me from implementing the eating part of " The Plan. " : ) I don't think this will be difficult for me at all. I do have a question: It seems that a lot of people who lose weight end up with gall bladder problems, which I don't want! Does the nutritional completeness of the CRON diet prevent this? Or does it only happen with rapid weight loss (I am not going to lose more than 3-4 pounds a month)? Has anyone had any problems with this? I love this group and feel like I've come home at last. The advice here is exactly what I have been looking for. Looking forward to many years of enjoyment with all of you! Dot
Guest guest
Dot: there have been no reports of gallbladder problems. That is not a typical side effect of CRON. Just to be sure I searched the archives and ain't nuttin' there. So happy you feel at home with us here. In the past couple of months we've had a substantial increase in membership and would love to hear from all the other newbies/lurkers out there. on 10/6/2002 1:51 PM, quailwomn@... at quailwomn@... wrote: > I don't think this will be difficult for me at all. This has been one of the issues that have made me wary of weight loss. As you can probably tell, I'm a worrier and a " what iffer. " : ) I truly appreciate having a reliable source for answers to my questions. Dot
Guest guest
Have a look at /files/CSPI%20plots%20of% 20BMI%20vs%20disease%20risk.xls in our files area. There is an increased risk of gallstones with increased BMI, so it may be the history of obesity that is the cause, rather than the weight loss. The risk relative to BMI is also reported in more detail in http://books.nap.edu/books/0309085373/html/180.html which is a segment of a book soon to be published Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy, Carbohydrates, Fiber, Fat, Protein and Amino Acids (Macronutrients) (2002) Food and Nutrition Board (FNB), Institute of Medicine (IOM) The link is to a page of the pdf preview of the book where the relative risk vs. BMI info is located. You can navigate the whole book from there. Iris > > >Dot: there have been no reports of > >gallbladder problems. That is not a > >typical side effect of CRON. Guest guest
Thanks, Iris. I am not able to view PDF files with Web TV, but I look forward to perusing it tomorow when I have access to a PC. I do realize that those with extra weight tend to form stones more readily. Of course, there is no way out of being overweight except to lose it. It's like being nine months pregnant and changing your mind about having a baby - you can't start over! I plan to lose the weight v-e-r-y slowly. : ) The good news, if the tendency is hereditary, is that my mother and sister were overweight (my sister has gained it back), and lost without forming stones). Dot (Somewhere I read just recently about taking bile salts during weight loss to prevent the gall bladder problems. What are bile salts anyway? Or did I dream this?)
