Guest guest
In response to Francesca’s musings about why some people are vital at 84 and others are not... Dr. J. Frazer Mustard and others in the Canadian research community are leaders in looking at social determinants of health. I ran across his research while writing my book on building healthy communities. See this link for an interview with him titled, “Why Some People Get Sick and Others Don’t.” http://www.imaginewhatif.com/Mustard.html Check out this overview of research on the social determinants of health (from our book, Trendbenders): http://www.communityinitiatives.com/trendbenders/chapter2.html A related body of research, very interesting, is The Search Institute’s work on developmental assets for youth. Why do some kids (even those living in poverty) thrive while others fall prey to drugs, violence, teen pregnancy and other hazards of youth? The connection between adults who don’t get sick and youth who thrive is “resiliency.” To vastly oversimplify, resilient people have strong connections to family, friends and community. So thanks, all you CRSupportGroup members, for your support! Even a virtual community can provide strong, healthy connections.
