The latest issue of Shape magazine has a column where a young woman

writes in, 5'4 " , 134 pounds, eating 1000 calories a day (she says)

had hit a plateau in weight loss after losing 50 lbs over a 2-year

period (about 2 lb / month, not too quickly), moderate exercise level.

She went to see a nutritionist, who told her she should be eating

2000 cal which she then does - result - gains 9 lb in a month.

The magazine also asks her if she really needs to lose any more

weight.

Reality check - 134 is at the very upper limit of non-overweight BMI

for her weight. She's not too skinny. While 1000 cal may be too low

for her activity level, who in their right mind would tell her to

double it!

I'd have been more impressed if they had suggested she really examine

what she is eating to see if the 1000 cal count were correct, and

what exactly she was eating.
