The newspaper this morning is reporting the new dietary guidelines

from the National Academy of Sciences - more fiber, better fats, more

exercise, fewer calories. The full text of the press release from

NAS, with links to the full report can be found at

OpenDocument

Be forewarned - the report doc is a HUGE technical document, but

interesting (what I've read so far). Starting on page 175 (there's a

special web-based readable version of the doc pre-pub - printed

version is not yet available) is a chapter

" Adverse Effects of Overconsumption of Energy " - wow!

This is followed by a series of tables listing BMI vs. increased risk

of various conditions. I haven't had a chance to look at all of it

but - take a look at our files area. There is a posting of old CSPI

data (I posted it) which plots some of the same type of info.

Surprise - your BMI goes up, risks of all sorts seem to rise. Duh!

It seems like you're supposed to be able to print individual pages,

but I haven't had it work yet - I sent a note to their technical

support folks.

CSPI's take on this is at

http://www.cspinet.org/new/200209051.html

Nothing new for us, but they're hammering at the gov folks to require

better nutritional info on meats and in restaurants. Gee, do you

think if some folks got a gander at what they're eating, they might

change? Maybe, but Darwin will win here also.
