Guest guest
Francesca, I eat about 1500(sometimes more, sometimes less) on average. My protein level may be lacking due to my affinity (to put it mildly) for sweets like sweet fruits and veggies, grains, etc. Often I have to force myself to eat protein b/c it usually doesn't sound good to me. I cannot give an exact number of grams per day, but I will track it for the next few days to see if I am indeed lacking. I'm naturally thin at 5'7 and 115-120 and in the past have had trouble keeping weight on hence my "high" calorie intake in CR terms. I really just try to emphasize the ON part more so than CR. My body feels most "comfortable" at 2000K, dipping below that causes hunger although 1500K is tolerable. Thanks suz for the MetRx suggestion, I will check those out. The hypoglycemia is defiantly worse when I go long periods w/out food or eat too little. I try to eat every few hours. I'm like a bear when I'm hungry and have to eat RIGHT that moment or else watch out!!!!! My poor husband!
Guest guest
Becca: how much protein are you eating? If I recall, you were quite restricted, calorie wise, n'est-ce pas? Walford has a nice little discussion that if you're feeling tired and weak, you probably need more protein. How long do you go between meals/snacks? Although Suz mentioned megamuffins, I'm not so sure that's the answer. How about giving us a bit more info such as protein intake, approx calorie level you're on, how long between meals/snacks and your weight/height? Are you still in the losing stage or are you stabilized? on 9/18/2002 4:31 PM, bugnewberry@... at bugnewberry@... wrote: > I've been having bouts of hypoglycemia and it's really putting a " damper " on > my CRONing. Guest guest
PS Becca, I agree with Francesca about making sure you're getting adequate protein. My thought on the mega-muffins would be as something to take with you in case you're having a spell away from home. I believe it's the protein in the regular MetRx bars which seems to make my son feel better right away though, so for sure Francesca is on the right track there. Mega Muffins supposedly have 11 grams of protein (21% of calories from protein), so I still think they might do the trick for you.
Guest guest
Bug: it seems then that you've answered your own question. Here's an idea: I don't know if you're into guar or not, but one idea for getting protein in a " sweet " way is something like Suz's Key Lime Pie Pudding or any other flavor, made with either FF yogurt or skim milk. In your case, add some EXTRA yogurt or skim milk when you make the pudding. Although these taste better chilled, there's no reason you can't take them with you in a small yogurt type or other container with a cover and a plastic spoon. That way you get your sweet taste (BTW they're really good) and more protein. Of course, Suz's suggestion of the MetX Bar's which are even more portable sounds good too. on 9/18/2002 5:46 PM, bugnewberry@... at bugnewberry@... wrote: > Francesca, I eat about 1500(sometimes more, sometimes less) on average. Guest guest
I used to get hypoglycemic when I tried lowering my fat intake too low. Try _replacing_ some of the high glycemic carbs you eat with some good nuts. It helped me anyway. Micky. -----Original Message----- From: bugnewberry@... Any suggestions/help are greatly > appreciated............... Main message: Probably you can get accustomed to that, so that you won't feel " very hungry " in these situations. I disestablished breakfast in autumn 2000. Since then, occasionally I skipped also lunch. In spring 2002 I left out lunch for about 4 weeks (only Mon to Fri). So I had regularly 21-hour fasts. My experience was that at beginning of skipping these meals, I also became hungry at " lunch time " . But I have got accustomed to these fasts and now I don't get hungry just because it's xx hours after the last meal. My evening meals are big, but often low-carb. I think I am not on CR, and I didn't lose weight even when I ate only once a day. AFAIK humans don't need necessarily carbs in their diet. It is possible to rely only on fats and proteins. In such a situation your metabolism switches to ketosis where ketons (?) are used as a surrogate for usual carbs. I suppose that your (=one's) body can learn to handle a shortage of carbs and after a while can switch smoothly to a state of low blood sugar, metabolizings ketons and not feeling hungry. A difference of my experience to yours could be that I was probably not short of energy and of proteins so that my body didn't have to signal hunger because of energy or protein deficiency. You could try to - just get accustomed - reduce proportion of carbs / high-gi carbs in your last meal before those situations you worry about getting hungry in an unappropiate situation If you use artificial sweeteners, you could try to abstain from them as they can induce insulin release, which is not followed by carbs, and so does not remove blood sugar from a meal, but lowers normal blood sugar to a level of low blood sugar. If you feel you could get unconscious in those situations (you wrote " light-headed, shaky and VERY hungry " ) due to low blood sugar, as it can happen in diabetics who have injected accidentally too much insulin, you should discuss it with your physician. > What type of snack should I keep in my car/purse > when these attacks come on? A snack that probably would be considered healthy would be some almonds. (If you think you must get something into your stomach). (A really dangerous situation of low blood sugar, as mentioned above, would be cured not by almonds, but by glucose, of course.) My opinion about nutrition/diet is influenced by Walford, paleo-stuff, Nicolai Worm, Udo Pollmer. I will not answer any mails from tomorrow (Sep 19) midday (European time) to 3rd October. Guest guest
Del, Welcome to the group! I'm hypoglycemic some of the time too, mine is caused by hormonal fluctuations so I completely understand your hesitancy in doing the flushes with lots of apple juice. I can get really ill if I do not eat regular and balanced meals. I have done several flushes with blood sugar problems as well as amalgram fillings it didn't seem to affect the success of my flushes. The only side effect that really caused me concern during my flushes was a rapid heart beat and as you probly already know it can be related to blood sugar problems and instability of the levels in our body. I have a book on ACV, from the Braggs and it mentions specifically diluting the apple juice for those that have low blood sugar while doing the flush.... I hope this helps answer some of your questions... Dee
