Guest guest
Hi Suz and All, My personal opinion would be to leave out grains/potatoes. Even if someone would have " extra " carbs to fill out their daily requirement, there are other carb foods that have a lower glycemic index and also give more bang for the buck. I think the only tuber that really could be included would be yams/sweet potatoes, as they have alot of vitamin A. Another good food, which hopefully I'll start making soon, is kefir. It's higher in protein and lower in carbs (and if made with low fat milk is also lower in fat) than milk or yogurt, and has additional vitamins and other goodies (I seem to like that phrase) from the bacteria. I would say most fermented foods in general would be good to add to your list. (BTW, I just so happen to have a book called " Ferment and Human Nutrition " .) Guest guest
Suz: Sweet potatoes, I feel should be included (I agree with Ben there). As for other whole grains, they do contain the ever elusive Vit E. There's also the problem of not knowing what will be discovered that's vital to life in the future in grains (or any other group of foods) that'll cure something or other. It's only very recently that scientists decided that berries such as blueberries helped with preventing some chronic diseases like Alzheimer's. As we all know, they're coming out with such new discoveries every day. So IMHO, delete a whole food group at your own risk. IOW the more variety the better. on 7/23/2002 12:26 PM, Suzanne Cart at massuz@... wrote: > I'd like some input from the group on whether or not I should include a row on > my spreadsheet for selecting a grain food each day such as oatmeal, wild rice, > sprouted wheat bread, wheat germ, etc. In the past I recall some discussion > about whether or not grains are even necessary in a CRON diet, and if so, are > they necessary daily? > > I'm also a bit stuck on potatoes, and find myself wanting to put all > tubers/roots onto the same selection line on the spreadsheet.
