Hi Everyone!

I really found the posts on kefir making interesting and have been

trying to figure out how to make it myself. I was a little confused

by the posts, and thought I could just buy a " kefir starter " from my

health food store and make it from that.... well, I bought

some " kefir starter " (freeze dried packets) and made a batch with

non fat milk. It was really easy and turned out good. I liked it

and was happy with the results. Then I joined the kefir making

group on and started reading the posts and learned that there

is something called kefir " grains " and that makes the REAL kefir.

What I made was just a one strain variety with no kefir grain

involved, I guess it was more like a yogurt type culture. So I have

been on an adventure to find the coveted kefir grains. I found a

website that listed people with extra grains to give away and found

a lady in my area (San Diego)I went there today, and she poured me a

glass of freshly made thick kefir, plain, and I have to say it was

the best kefir I have ever tasted. I have only had the commercial

sweet flavored kind. She took the " grains " out into her hands and

split them and gave me half of hers. It is really different looking

and she said it will grow over time. So I took my baby home and it

is busy making me my first batch of the good stuff! I can't wait to

see how this turns out. The health benefits of kefir are really

worth the effort!
