Guest guest
Larry, I think you are giving a very once-sided jaded slant that in part is correct, but mostly quite inaccurate. First, college GPA doesn't necessarily reflect physician competence. Some of the most brilliant docs on paper are terrible physicians. In contrast, some great docs have mediocre grades in med school (or high school). Additionally, some med schools have actually instituted Pass/Fall systems in order to deflect competitiveness and deemphasize grades. The med school curriculum is not made for "mastering" as in high school and college. It's designed to bombard you with an enormous amount of information so you'll absorb at least the most crucial elements. Therefore, your grades=competence theory is just not as simple as you attempt to make it out to be. Second, the average student loan amount is close to $80,000 not $500,000 as you suggest. Residencies are paid positions. Third, as for your statement about parents brainwashing their children, I just completed the premed program. Personally, I didn't know anyone whose parents were brainwashing them to become docs. The only thing I didn't like very much at all was the competitiveness and early-twenties insecurity. Lastly, I agree with you that physicians may loose focus and burn-out, leading to a seemingly disinterest in their patients. But that's no different than in any health service-oriented job, unfortunately. The answer in my opinion is to get referrals from good sources, interview your doctor, not put up with BS from physicians that don't seem to care, make it a priority to find ones that do, and therefore be pro-active in treatment. - Christian What most of us forget is that there 4 PASSING grades and only 1 failing one. Anyone EVER ask their docs what their GPA was in colleges, or grade average from high school? Some docs are D students, others are C and B... HOW many are A? How many docs have gone to med school because their parents brainwashed them from birth "become a doctor, we need a doctor in the family". They go to college on a dream, then they graduate with 500,000 in student loans... before their loans are paid off are they jaded? Think of any profession? People come into a new job, have GREAT ideas, the people in the job before them knock them down, and everyone finds their level of complacency and drudge. After seeing 18 people before you saying this and saying that, is your doc's mind on you, or the last 3 patients he just promised something to? Guest guest
Good Luck Jody. You don't need that attitude from a doctor. And by the way, you are living with it. Like you have a choice. I hope that your next doctor is better. Guest guest
No, Doctors have different priorities. While your top priority would be to rid yourself of symptom and pain, your doctors top two priorities are: 1. Not being sued for malpractice 2. Remaining board certified This is best accomplished by maintaining the status quo, regardless of whether it helps the patient or not. -----Original Message-----From: G. Guest guest
Phil: Surely you gest! However, there are SOME compassionate doctors. It just seems they are far & few away! When you find one, like I have, be sure to thank them LOUD & CLEAR! Usually the ACAM doctors are truly a "CUT ABOVE". Yea for ACAM, and other alternative doctors. Hang in there guts. Share a smile, make someone happy! :) Warm regards, Cyd -----Original Message-----From: G.
