TESTICULAR CANCER RATES INCREASING

Date: Apr 10, 1999

From: bphata@...

Westport, Apr 08 (Reuters Health) - A study of active duty members in

the Department of Defense supports other recent reports of an increase

in the incidence of testicular cancer worldwide.

Dr. Ian M. and colleagues at Army Medical Center in

San , Texas, accessed data from a centralized Department of

Defense tumor registry that have been systematically kept since 1988.

The investigators found that the rate of testicular cancer among

active duty personnel rose from 8.62 cases per 100,000 in 1988 to

15.38 cases per 100,000 in 1996.

Dr. and colleagues note that the ethnic makeup of military

personnel did not change significantly during the study period.

Rather, other explanations for the increase, including

" ...environmental endocrine disrupters, " or genetic factors, need to

be considered, they say.

The findings are published in the April issue of Urology.
