Guest guest
great article! while my son's school has been pretty good about offering support services, i've had to get on them about inflating his grades to make it appear he's doing better than he is. when i brought it up in an ARD, each teacher said she gave him a better grade because she knew he was capable of better work. whut?!?! it put me in an awkward position of asking them to stop because there still is a pervasive culture of 'if he has As then he doesn't have a problem'. they said they were afraid i would be ANGRY at them if he got bad grades. (mentally banging my head against a wall) ACK!! What a crazy school! Basically she is saying her grades are not reflective of his ability since she chooses to inflate them! It reminds me of a nasty meeting I had years ago when my older ds was in 2nd grade. The school was not helping him with much and didn't think he had any problems. Anyway, he would bring home two kinds of papers from school - A's and F's. Nothing in between! They told me that making a few F's now and then was not a big deal. I brought out the large stack of F's I had been saving and proceeded to go through them - showing that he is getting F's because he has no clue what to do on these pages. And there were also a LOT of F papers! The school people's response? Don't write the F in big red on his papers. As if that solved the problem! LOL. He was still making the F's only they would not put a grade on the paper. Sometimes it makes me wonder what some people are thinking when they go into education??????
