Guest guest
Two points to this post, lol... First is how shocked I am at how many teachers (of special needs kids) use taking away a recess as punishment!!! Its alarming, I met with the resource teacher (they would like my dd to spend half her day with) and she routinely uses " you'll miss the next recess " as a consquence if kids, don't get their homework done, act out, misbehave, etc. Then today I went to sit in on a special day class for learning handicapped children and what do I hear? The teacher (who is supposed to be specially educated) telling one of the students who is having a hard time finding his pencil and paper and getting organized that if he doesn't finish in time he'll have to stay in at recess and complete the assignment! Later she tells me how most of her kids have ADHD and she has several with Autism in her class, WHAT??? How can they possibly justify keeping hyperactive kids inside for punishment? My dd has such severe ADHD that if they told her she couldn't leave until she finished she would spend the night! I'm trying to find the right placement for her and it is so hard. She is currently in mainstreamed 1st grade and doing terrible. We had her first IEP meeting and she is testing at Kindergarten or preschool level in most areas, although her IQ is in the high intelligence range in some areas she is testing gifted but she cannot read or write. So obviously things are very wrong at school, the teacher doesn't have a clue and they want to keep her in that class 55% of the day. Then the lovely resource lady for the other 45%, the one who takes recesses away, oh I know I could put that in her IEP but it just shows how truly clueless this lady is. Anyway I know there are better teachers in the district at other schools. I know one who has 10 kids 5 HFA and 5 Aspies in her class, she is awesome. Although they keep telling me no because we haven't tried the resource room first and that my dd doesn't have speech problems and that is a communicatively handicapped class. Well how is that possible if she has 5 aspie kids? Then in talking to me about this they get her name wrong or the wrong diagnosis, it really pisses me off. They don't even know who they're talking about how can they possibly think they know what is best! I'm not giving up, I know its close to the end of the year but if there is any way I want her butt moved this year. She is so miserable about school, she cries about going and pretends to be sick. She is in trouble all the time. They keep saying there are only a couple months of school left but hum thats 10 weeks, 5 days a week that is 50 mornings of convincing a very sad, emotional child to go to school where the teacher is so fed up she cries! sorry so long, you know how we can go on and on and on....lol
