I have been thinking and thinking about this subject. I have to

provide another analogy. My family are kind of natural " gurus " and

have turned rather granolaish in a way. My son is not on prescription

meds but is taking products from Native Remedies, simply because we

tried them first and they worked beautifully for him.

We love cloth diapering our little ones and do it for a variety of

reasons, but mainly because we feel it is best not to expose heated

areas of their body to so many chemicals and then there is the whole

landfill issue. But that is our feeling for OUR children and we do not

preach that to anyone or look down on anyone else's choices. However,

our last son about 1 1/2 yrs into diapering started developing horrible

sores and we could not get them cleared up with anything we tried.

Finally, we switched over to disposable diapers and within 2 days the

sores were gone and stayed gone. Now obviously, despite my personal

views, I am not going to let the poor little guy suffer in pain when

there is another alternative! We didn't know if it would make any

difference, but his rashes were very painful and when it gets like

that, you are willing to try anything. He still uses them today. But

the analogy I wanted to make is that I talk to lots and lots of cloth

diapering families and there are lots who do it for different reasons,

but then there are many who do it for themselves as in to say, " I don't

expose my baby to disposable diapers " but they do it in an " I'm better

than you are " attitude. Truly, I think they diaper this way as an ego

booster to themselves or as a way to stand out or get attention (you

can cloth diaper in a crowd and get TONS of attention from everyone

around you - especially if you use the really super cute new types of

cloth diapers.)

I personally feel like the people who speak out that strongly again

prescription meds are like those type of people. It is an ego boost to

themselves to have " cured " or " controlled " THEIR child with natural

alternatives and/or therapy alone - but I feel like they have lost the

idea that it truly is about the child and put this " grandiose " feeling

upon themselves, " look how wonderful I am, " or " look what I can do "

or " I'm better than you are because you use meds and I don't " and often

don't see that their child is truly still suffering.

It is wonderful when ocd can be controlled without meds but often times

it cannot be. When the sores are there and they won't go away, you try

anything and everything and stick with what works.

Kudos to all of us who have worked so hard to help our children. It is

wonderful that we use whatever means we need to, to help our children

be the best they can be, despite the ocd.

Yes, I can relate to this too. We did cloth diapers, cooked

everything from scratch, organic, very health conscious etc...

Funny, when OCD showed up, made not a scrap of difference(at least

not to the OCD).

I hang out with lots of different people and we all have different

beliefs and different lifestyles. What we have in common is that we

love our kids and try to our best by them whatever that means. What

works for one family/child might be a complete mess for another. If

there were a right way wouldn't it be simple!

I do have to say though, that I have found some of the most dogmatic

are what I guess would be called new age, granola types (of which I

am considered one, well maybe more eccentric) who do stand in

judgement of others who are just getting through their day. I have

always found this ironic.

Well said Craig! I like your analogy...

I was invited to use this Board by Dr. A's team however he performed a Sleeve procedure on me, I would hate to think that I am no longer welcome just because I choose not to have the Lap Band. I wade thru most of the posts looking for bits and pieces of information that is specific for my situation however I have never downed anyone for their choice to have the Band or to give advice on the band and I would hope those of us that have had the sleeve would be granted the same courtesy. It is a decision, a personal decision but one that Dr. A helped us make. We are here for the same reason that those that have had the band are, education and support.

Not feeling very welcome

Marie
