Guest guest
I have a few personal friends with special needs children in my area (Henry County GA); however, our county does not have a local support group (that I am aware of). Several of my friends and I were talking about starting a group. At first, it may be informal (coffee at the Java - right ?) until we can " figure out " how to formalize an official support group. I am very motivated right now, as we have been talking about this for some time and the need is very real. Also, today I sat and watched a very young boy walk past me with shackles on his wrists and ankles as we waited for our turn to face the judge in juvenile court. My attention was drawn to him because he looked so young and appeared to be " different from the others. " I sat back and watched his mother as she sat alone with fear on her face. She began talking to one of the police officers about her son being in Special Education. It was very difficult to fight back the tears as I watched this boy and his mother. I was fortunate to have my husband there with me and " by luck " a public defender that understands disabilities; therefore, I did not feel as paniced about our case. But, inside I cried for that mother that sat there alone as she watched her son walk past her in handcuffs. No one was there for her. That should never happen. Yes, I eventually got up the nerve to go talk to her, but I was nervous because I did not know how she was going to respond to a stranger coming to sit with her. I don't know if I helped, but I hope so. My point is, even if it is just sitting down over a cup of coffee....we need one another. No one should have to go through the Spec. Ed system alone. If you live in the Henry County GA (or surrounding area) and you are interested in getting together for coffee, I would love to hear from you. Hopefully, together we can formalize an official support group.
