Guest guest
Rene, As far as EFAs, the EPA is the important part. Make sure your Omega 3s contain 1.5-2 grams/day of EPA. DHA is less important for managing depression. Also, try adding about 400 IU Vitamin E (d- alpha). It can take several months to notice a difference. I have never taken the other supps you mention. Pleeeeease try to avoid SSRIs. I took them for years. I feel better now (off SSRIs) than I felt while on them. Nordic Naturals ProEPA is what I use. Weaning myself off Effexor this last time (2 years ago) was a horrible ordeal. I still struggle, but I've been living with depression for so long that I'm sure some of my problems are learned rather than physical (how do you suddenly become " happy " and outgoing?... it is all pretty complicated). I also got lazy this summer with my supplements. I notice a difference now that I again take EFAs daily. I think you can safely say that your near-clinical depression is a physical symptom traceable to chelation. It might have been around before your chelated, but it has changed since you started, right? Consider this a long term project. If anything, you are hopefully preventing heavy metal problems (dementia, auto-immune disease, etc) from appearing as you get older. I've hit my 40s, which has apparently brought it's own set of problems. That saliva hormone test looks interesting at times, too. I've resorted to low dose birth control pills... not good... but I needed SOMETHING. Hang in there. Don't stop because you see nothing. Honestly, consider that a good thing. Your judgement might be a little clouded these days, too. Oh, if you are a sugar hound (like me); eat less of that. It felt like I was on drug withdrawal, but I feel better with less sugar in my diet. Pam > > Hi all > > I've finished 10 rounds of DMSA/ALA chelation for myself. It might have been around > before your chelated, but it has changed since you started, right? My thoughts too. Rene, you could also try a round of ALA only. I feel better when I do rounds with ALA only. Rounds with ALA + DMSA feel more " rough " to me. Not everyone feels this way, of course. Adding to your list, I'd make sure I was getting some exercise. It's a mood lifter, no doubt. No need to kill yourself at the gym (besides you might have exercise exhaustion from the mercury poisoning). A brisk walk, outside, in the sunlight, everyday. Light boxes, if seasonal depression is a problem for you in the northern latitudes. A good book which explains the need for sunlight and exercise is " When Your Body Gets the Blues " . My copy of Amalgam Illness is on loan to my brother, but Andy has specific recommendations for depression. > > Consider this a long term project. I've resorted to low dose > birth control pills... not good... but I needed SOMETHING. Pam, you might want to look into the use of natural progesterone cream. I'm reading a book by Lee right now about estrogen dominance and women's hormones. Lots of things on thyroid and adrenals, mood, and energy levels. There might be something helpful in there for you. Lee makes a case that progesterone cream is more effective and safer than birth control pills. > > Oh, if you are a sugar hound (like me); eat less of that. It felt > like I was on drug withdrawal, but I feel better with less sugar in > my diet. You can also try supplementing with chromium picolinate (see Amalgam Illness) to help regulate blood sugar levels. Rene, I'd pursue the thyroid/adrenal support before I'd do the lithium or SSRIs. Low lithium seems common with deranged mineral transport, but I'm not so sure it always indicates the need for supplementing. By round 10, I felt more cheerful, more often, but still had a lot of brain fog or " dull " days. I felt changes, but I'd say they were very subtle. Has your husband commented one way or the other about any changes he may be observing in you? You'll get lots of help figuring out the thyroid/adrenals at Frequent Dose Chelation. How old are you, Rene? How are your periods? Baby steps, Rene. I hope you feel better soon. Remember what Andy says, supplement, and chelate, chelate, chelate. in Illinois, chelating adult, round 35, and chelating 2 NT kids

I have had > absolutely NO physical symptoms that I can trace to chelation, on or > off round, even the time I had to stop a round part way through. It was the same for me Rene. I did 16 rounds and then stopped, or rather petered out, not because I decided it wasn't working or I'm not poisoned, but because I was tired and...just not getting any positive reinforcement. A year later and I was doing a lot worse, so I started up again. >I'm currently at 25 mg DMSA and > 50 mg ALA, and am considering going with 50mg of each next round. When I got up to 50 mg DMSA and 100 mg ALA, I started having panic attacks. Which are awful -- but at least then I knew it was doing something. I'm back down to 50 mgs ALA now. I'd suggest increasing until you feel a bump, then backing off. >I do think that it's odd not to feel even a little > different when chelating. How long should I stick with this? For myself I'm finding wading thought thyroid/adrenal problems terrifically difficult. For a lot of reasons. I've just emailed Andy for his consultation packet and am looking for a doctor who'll agree to do it. I seem to be able to deal with n's problems OK but my own is just too hard to puzzle out. > Might go the Canary Club saliva test route if I can > bring myself to spend the money. My suggestion is to comb through " Amalgam Illness " and try whatever supps Andy recommends for specific problems. The adrenal stuff -- licorice, ginger, gotu kola -- I've found helpful, more so than adrenal cortex which made me anxious. Anyway, sorry I'm not more helpful, but at least you've got company. Guest guest
Rene, Hey it's cadmium companion over here...I am sorry to hear of your current hardships..I feel exactly where you are. I want to quite after two rounds..I feel better off my supplements too. Odd..? Have you tried lithium aspartate or orotate? Many mercury people are so low in this or have it but the mercury disrupts it, so they are chronically depressed. It does help me and has helped stabalize my daughters moods too. I have no lithium on hair test, she has very little. This is safer than SSR's and I have tried every SSR out there, they all work for a few months, then the mercury wins out and they don't work anymore and you have to try another one. You can tell from your hair test if you need adrenal and thryoid stuff, so don't bother with the doc...I hear you. Too much hassle, just so they can tell you it is fine, or not low enough to help you. You can check your adrenal by using a flashlight, go into the bathroom, turn off the lights while standing in front of the mirror. Shine the flashlight into the side of your eye and watch your pupil in the mirror. It should constrict in the light and stay that way. If it constricts and then gets larger, smaller, larger, smaller...your adrenals are messed up! I am surprised that you have no symptoms either. Maybe that is a good thing! 12 mg is making me sick when I take it, that is without any ALA yet. Yuck... Is is possible to test urines for metals on your next round to show yourself, what is commming out? I know for us, there is no way we can afford to test, but maybe it will help you know what is going on. VRP sells lithium, does that help..? After all it is a supplement so maybe we can find a way to get it there. St. s'wort is good for depression too. Hope some of this helps..email if you wish..see what else we can figure out. Since > I'm chelating my son anyhow it is not a lot of extra trouble, but it > is more money. I'd say stick with it. After 13.5 months of chelation, I feel a lot less symptoms now than before. Some rounds (if I don't make any mistakes) I don't feel much at all. But I recently did a urine toxic metals test and I am definitely excreting metals. > One thing that I am struggling with right now, however, is > depression/brain fog, and it's beginning to creep into " major > clinical " territory. So you are more depressed now than before starting? For me, my adrenals went totally bye-bye within a month or two of starting chelation (they were probably on the brink before I started). Maybe for you it's the thyroid that's going. Hypothyroid certainly can cause bad depression. Adrenals can contibute to mood problems, too - not sure if they cause straight depression in some cases, but maybe. Chelation is very stressful to the endocrine system. I wonder a lot about people who take big doses of ALA (I take 8 mg, so from my point of view pretty much everyone is taking a massive dose). ALA tends to reduce blood sugar levels (I should probably double check that - but I'm starting to trust my memory instead of looking things up all the time). If I am right about this, it would put quite a strain on the adrenals to keep blood sugar balanced. At my physical this week my doctor wanted to > give me an Rx for SSRI's, but since I'm seeing him for a followup > exam in a month I told him that I wanted to try supplements first. > So, here's the plan: > > - continuing with chelation, plus all of the supps that go with it > - more EFA's > - trying 5-HTP I would definitely try these before SSRIs. Maybe someone else is more familiar with this. I know it's quite expensive and high cost tends to avert my attention to other stuff. Though I think if you have other reason to suspect methylation problems, this might be worth looking into. > - I really should do some kind of thyroid/adrenal testing given my > hair test results, but knowing the hoops we had to jump through for > my son (who ended up getting good results/no thyroid problems) I am > having a hard time mustering the energy to fight this battle on my > own behalf. Also looking at symptoms on http://www.drrind.com/scorecardmatrix.asp may be helpful to determine if adrenals and/or thyroid are out of whack. > - lithium was red low on my hair test, but getting OTC lithium across > the border into Canada might be a problem. Don't know how hard this is to get in Canada. Maybe J knows? I am finding this pretty helpful for myself, but my mood issues are more up and down, not just down. > Um, what else am I missing? My brain is on low gear these days. Someone mentioned exercise and I totally agree with that. I dealt with horrible dysphoric symptoms for years by getting as much exercise as I could (and taking B complex with extra B6). Those helped a lot. I also agree that trying progesterone cream might be helpful, especially if the mood issues seem sensitive to hormonal changes. --

I have taken SAMe for years now and find it really helps with joint pain. It probably has some effect on mood, too. If you use onibasu, you can find recipe's for " poor man's methylation " which is a cheaper supplement combo that should do the same thing as SAMe (except I find it doesn't for me). I don't know about any 5-HTP issues. > > - I really should do some kind of thyroid/adrenal testing given my > > hair test results, Did your hair test show adrenal or thyroid indications? See pg. 135 of Amalgam Illness for Andy's list of antidepressant supplements. Sadly, I am taking most of them. I am feeling better overall, especially now that I'm on thryoid and adrenal support. I just started Iodoral and it seems to be giving me even better relief from joint pain and more overall energy. I'm not sure I was depressed so much as just in pain and fatigued. Okay so I am just wondering what if metals is not the problem? There is a test you can order from Neuro Science it is a neuro transmitter test. If you are interested I will look and try to determine what the number is (I took it and both of my kids took it as well) basically it is based on the premise it measures your neurotranmitters by measuring what is going on in the gut. THere are many amino acids out there that can help. Email me if you want me to check and see if i can determine what the test number is. YOu then can go to a compounding pharmacy and order many of the products. 5 htp, gaba, both of these can be helpful for sleep and depression. Hope this helps. > When I got up to 50 mg DMSA and 100 mg ALA, I started having panic > attacks. Which are awful -- but at least then I knew it was doing > something. I'm back down to 50 mgs ALA now. I'll add to the list of suggestions, dropping your dose. I've read many time on FDC to take it slow, that side effects can creep up on you, and to sit with a particular dose for 4-5 rounds before increasing. I have my copy of AI back. I do have an amino acids test on my list of things to ask the doc for, I think you're right that getting those supplemented correctly could make a big difference. No doubt that metals are my problem though. When you're up for it, let's see what you're taking (supplement list, how much, how often and your weight). The more I think about this, I think you should bring your dose DOWN, not go up. It took me a *long time, but I finally realized that spending even 5 minutes doing a few poses was enough to make the difference in mood. Yoga is magic, really. And it doesn't have to be the pretzelly stuff to work. OK somebody needs to make a tape -- " Yoga for the Metal-Poisoned " . Hope you're feeling better quickly. Guest guest
> I'm 35. I weigh (ahem) about 165 lbs right now. Rene, to give you an idea, I'm at 140 #, probably only moderately poisoned, and by round 10 I was taking only 25 mg DMSA and 25 mg ALA. Take it low, and slow. > > Supplements: > > 700 iu natural mixed tocopherols/day > 20,000 iu A/day > 100 mg CoQ10/day > 2 tsp. I get half weight plus 20 = 102 mg daily. Are you sure you need the copper? Do you get the nose bleeds too? See Amalgam Illness pg 99 for discussion on Cu. > 100 mcg molybdenum You could go much higher on the moly. Pg. 134 of AI. > 200 mcg selenomethionine > Candex at night > > I've temporarily taken adrenal cortex extract out of the mix to see > if that is the reason my eczema is flaring, though I doubt it. Anything in Onibasu on eczema? In AI, pg. 124 starts the discussion on brain function and things you can do to address depression. Lots and lots of info in there Rene, and maybe something will click for you. Will your mom and/or husband read this section, so they understand the root of your depression and support you? Are you having " crazy thoughts " (look for references in AI for glutamine) or feeling suicidal (pg. 130)? If you don't feel better bringing the dose down, and you can't figure out what to do with the supplements, do whatever you need to do (thinking rx antidepressants) to get yourself in a safe spot, so you can think again and take care of yourself and your family. In AI, pg. 135 is the list of supplements for anxiety, depression, and brain support. And, out of the house, everyday, walk + sunshine. Guest guest
Rene, I don't know if this helps or not, but since we both have cadmium issues on top of mercury, this might not agree with what others tell you but I stopped all my vitamins as of last week. I seem sicker on them. The only thing I am taking is Adrenal Cortex which is helping my moods, and other symptoms. I plan to add thyroid support later in the week. I am not going to do a round until I am back on supplements of course. I am using FortiFlax liberally every morning which seems to help. The days I don't get those EFA's I notice it. There are others on frequent dose chelation who have reported the inability to tolerate the vitamins at first. I may try digestive enzymes also to see if I can tolerate the vitamins better. Above all...get some sleep! This seems to be key for me, I get so run down doing all the chelation rounds for the kids, and supplements and housework...etc. That I am literally exhausted! > > When you're up for it, let's see what you're taking (supplement > list, how much, how often > > and your weight). > > > > Okay, here goes: > > I'm 35.
