Guest guest
Corelle seems to be the safest from what I have read. Or clear Pyrex glass. I read a lot about safe cookware and dishes in a book on lead poisoning. Stear clear of fine china...most of it has lead in the glazing. Any dish company you can call and ask about the testing for lead leaching on that particular brand of china. But basically, kids should not eat from fine china. (not that most of us would let them anyway). Clear glass or white corelle without any patterns. Some china is labelled lead free. With ceramics or china some companies use lead in the glazes or in the coloring of a pattern. Price did not seem to matter in this. Even the most expensive china leached high amounts of lead. Earthenware...gotta check the glaze on that too. Above all..never use any china, ceramic, or earthenware that has a chip or crack. Stear clear of any you find at craft functions or " homemade " peices. Plastic is always an option for kids providing it never sees a dishwasher or microwave oven. Both compromise the plastic and can cause leaching of chemicals into the food. Now if you are really confused...good old paper plates! > > Now that I have the final verdict on safe cookware...being glass is > best, cast iron, and stainless steel ok. Guest guest
Thanks...I think I'll give corelle a whirl...it sounds a little more durable than just glass. Glass makes me nervous for a kid less than 3 so the paper is a great idea too > > > > Now that I have the final verdict on safe cookware...being glass > is > > best, cast iron, and stainless steel ok. Guest guest
Just wanted to let you know that my " older " set of Corelle dishes tested positive for lead. I had been using them for my children for 4 years or so. Probably some of the newer stuff is safe, and this set did have designs in it, but be sure and test whatever you get with a lead test kit before using it. If it tests positive-take it back. Guest guest
-How old was the corelle? I am really curious now. I have a newer set but a few older peices. The white with the green flowers around the edges? I am going to contact the company about my other sets. As far as clear glass..I was nervous giving them to my son before he was 3 but we just used a lot of caution, eating only at the table, and never leave them alone with the glasses or dishes. Still hard though. Luckily he has never dropped or broken any. The older kids seems to be the ones to break them. Thanks..for the information though, this is vital in our home. -- In , " sbarron6fun " <rsbarron@...> wrote: > > Just wanted to let you know that my " older " set of Corelle dishes > tested positive for lead. Guest guest
Jan My set was pretty old (I'm 40 and we used them in my house growing up ever since I can remember) When I had my triplets my mom brought them over thinking that they would be good to use for the children. Well I used them for my 4 children for the last 4 years or so. They were great, so I thought, until I recently tested them with a lead stick. They were the only ones out of all my dishes that turned red. And yes they were the white with green/red flowers, etc. I do not know about the newer corelle sets, but I would certainly test them and all the rest of your dishes too, just to be sure. Guest guest
Sheresa, Thanks you so much for this alert. I did have a few peices of the white with green flowers from when I was a kid. IN the junker now!! Will do further testing but it seems the older stuff is the problem. > > > > > > > > > > > > Now that I have the final verdict on safe cookware...being > > > glass > > > > > is > > > > > > best, cast iron, and stainless steel ok. Guest guest
Well that is more than likely true in most cases, however, someone on another list recently posted that they had purchased new dishes at Target and that when she went and bought the lead test kits, they tested positive as well. I don't think it was a Corelle set though. My other sets of dishes are also fairly old (wedding gifts 18 yrs ago) and they tested fine. So I really think we just have to err on the side of caution and test anything that we plan to use wether it be new or old. I'll add that it is absolutely ridiculous that we can't even trust the safety of dishes that are designed to put food on. We truly live in a toxic world these days, sadly.
