Guest guest
Daer Pharmgirl, While Xanax, alprazolam, an anti-anxiety or anxiolytic drug of the benzodiazepine family, does treat anxiety associated with depression, it is not a " mood altering or mood stabilizing drug " per se. An antidepressant would be considered a mood stabilizing drug, such as Prozac, Elavil. In fact Elavil gets it's name from " elevating the mood " . Xanax is a drug that helps with compulsve thoughts of fear or worry (=anxiety). It is used in panic attacks. Xanax can be prescribed for depression, but as adjunct therapy. Xanax works by increasing the ability of GABA, a chemical in the brain, to cross the synapse and bind to BZ1 or BZ2 receptors. It also increases the effect of existing GABA and it also ACTS like GABA. If GABA or Xanax binds to the BZ1 receptor site the pt will experience more sleep. If the GABA or Xanax binds to theBZ2 receptorsite there will be relaxation of muscle, thought process will slow down etc I hope that this helps you, Jeanetta Mastron CPhT BS Chemistry Founder/Owner > Is Xanax a mood stabilizing drug or does it have other uses? Guest guest
It appears that Xanax is not a narcotic even though it is addictive. If it's definitely not a narcotic, then LDN will work. I'd recommend asking your Pharmacist specifically if it is a narcotic.
