Guest guest
Hi Eva, There is a lot of information on the Apraxia Kids message boards regarding fish oil and omega-3 supplements. You can search using either phrase and find a ton of info. There is a book called 'The LCP Solution' that has great information in great detail. Apraxia- kids also has a great article on it at http://www.apraxia- kids.org/atf/cf/{145BA46F-29A0-4D12-8214-8327DCBAF0A4}/richardson.pdf Dosage: In a nutshell, the research suggests that you give your kid Omega-3 or Omega-3,6,9 for 3 months, with a minimum of 480mg of DHA per day (there is a 500mg per day EPA guideline as well, but if you concentrate on DHA you'll probably be okay). If you are going to see improvement, you will see it in that time. If you do see improvement, after the 3 month " building up " period, you cut back to 1/2-1/3 to maintain the levels in the body. Which Supplement?: Brands that I've seen discussed are ProEFA by Nordic Naturals, Efalex, Coromega, ChildLife EFA Blend and Carlson Lab's Fish Oil. You can use capsules and pop them or buy liquid. There are omega-3 supplements available without fish oil, so if that is a concern, you can look for those. Preparation: You should not heat the fish oil or put it in hot things, as that oxidizes the oil and changes its efficacy, but rather use yogurt, applesauce, or whatever (I mix it with melted, but cool, carob chips or chocolate chips and freeze them into " chocolate cookies " ). Does it work? I personally had incredible success with it and have heard many success stories and a few no-success stories. I have found this seems to be related to how many physical symptoms of EFA deficit the child is exhibiting. Allergic Reactions: Two people I know of had children who reacted to ProEFA due to some of the extra ingredients in that particular brand. That one is the big one and most people use it with no problem. Though there is no evidence in any of the research of allergic reactions, you might consider starting slowly so that if your child has an allergic reaction then you will catch it right away. And, of course, always consult with your doctor or nutritionist before implementing a supplementation. --- Always have to add that . a
