For my kids, I was able to remove enzymes after chelation. I used ALA [alpha lipoic acid] as chelator. http://www.danasview.net/chelate.htm Dana

Is the underlying cause pancreatic under > production? What information is out htere on this line of thinking? I have put whatever I could find in my enzyme book and on the www.enzymestuff.com site. The research seems to show that there isn't anything wrong with pancreatic function or output in most ASD people. I can send several specific studies on this if you don't find what you are looking for. So the pancreas seems to be find. However, the function and integrity of the intestinal gut lining appears to be a problem. The enzymes produced/located in the gut lining are not working adequately (several studies measuring this). Plus when the gut lining is not working, you have poor absorption of nutrients and a leaky gut situation. There are assorted research studies showing a lot of nutrients in asd people as well as hyper immune systems, and many food and chemical intolerances. Good stuff isn't getting into the body and bad stuff is. So healing the gut becomes a major key to healing as that is where the crux of much of the problems happens. Many in autism are in agreement with healing the gut (which is also important for many non-autism health conditions as well). But how exactly to accomplish this is debated. I feel that the science as well as much practical experience shows that digestive enzyme supplements are prime way to accomplish this. Enzymes help repair intestinal tissues - proactively, not just passively hoping it will get better on its own. Enzymes help digest the food you do eat (even special diet foods) so that the nutrition is more available to the body. Enzymes help to clear out pathogens, and help to reduce gunk getting into the body in the first place. So this reduces the food intolerances and helps relieve the immune system. Taking enzymes along with any other supplememts or meds can also enhance the effectiveness of those supplements or meds. A win-win all the way around. Research supporting all this, at every step, is at the www.enzymestuff.com site and outline in the enzyme books. Also, after 5 years of experience with enzymes, there are mountains of personal stories supporting that this 'theory' and research do in fact turn out the way as it is thought to. My own boys do not require enzymes at all anymore. One stopped needing there after a couple years of regular use. The other one needed less and less (starting in the 5th month of enzymes), until he also no longer needs them. We did not do any special chelation or other biomedical therapy although I have always tried to reduce/eliminate the junk as best as possible. Each person is different, so you may find excellent results with something that we did not even need. Anyway, yes, there is lots of very solid and very long-standing science- based research supporting all this...much more than for most other therapies or supplements promoted for gut healing/autism. .
