Guest guest
I agree; autism or not, I am livid, and cannot see why anyone would think it IS okay; I would be outraged if he was 'NT' or autistic, and even as angry or angrier if my child was one of the others sitting in that room, now wondering every year of their school lives if they will be kicked out, etc.; imagine what it will do to their creativity, fear, etc. of all teachers and behaviors of them for years and years to come; they won't remember a think from kindergarten other than the teacher, what she did, to whom, and they will remember / be emotionally 'scarred' or damaged for life over it until they 'deal' with it appropriately. My opinion of those whom agree with the teacher, is only that "the devil is everywhere" and this is another one of those works of the 'devil.' (and, there is no other explanation; it is insane and that is why those whom know it is wrong must stand up and fight for that which is right!!!). Guest guest
- I just watched this story on Fox News and I started crying. How can anyone be so cruel? Good luck getting the teacher fired..........the NEA RARELY fires anyone. This story has me remembering all of the problems my son encountered in school. His kindergarten teacher eventually sat his desk in the corner and did not even give him the handout papers to work on! Other problems too numerous to list here. Tomorrow is my son's last day of school. He has gone to a special partial hospitalization school for the last 6 years......since middle school (which was a complete disaster) His district is graduating him. This is very scary to me..........but, what good luck, our county is starting a new program next year called Get Real.....he will spend mornings with Life and Social Skills, and afternoons learning different jobs. He can be in this program for up to 3 years if needed. My son is not nearly ready to work. We are hoping by the year after next, he will be able to take a computer class at our local vocational school. Anyway, I feel so bad for this other (my son is also), and hope this experience will become a distant memory for him. WE NEED BETTER TEACHERS AND BETTER SPECIAL ED TEACHERS!!!!!!!!!!! -Sara > > So glad to see 's story is getting the attention he needs. He is > SO CUTE. I wonder what their personal home life is like....I can't believe a parent would approve of a teacher doing that. they must be her personal circle of friends !. and even so, I wouldn't support that. I wonder what that teacher is thinking now - now that she heard from the other side of parents which is against her. besides getting " unbecoming of a teacher " if they use that term for teachers, she should have to apologize to that child in front of the whole class !. Guest guest
Hmmm, if he only had one friend, it tells me he is doing fairly good for a kid with AS, lol. And it also highlights one of the bigger problems kids with AS have - social skills, making friends, social etiquette. That's probably what I would have said to that guy! The sad part to this story is - the IDEA has provisions for just this kind of situation. If the school had only followed the laws in place - done an FBA, brought in an expert in autism to help provide a BP, given the kid the needed therapy, an aide, taught his classmates about his disability, educated the teacher how to teach someone with AS - you would have to know the year could have gone rather well. The parents need to get a sped atty on this. It's just like taking someone with an obvious physical disability like no legs and chastising him the whole year because he is late to school every day since he can't get on the bus, can't get into the classroom (no ramps provided), can't sit at his desk, can't join in circle time - all the while the school makes no provisions to transport him, no way to get inside the school, no way to alter his desk to fit his wheel chair, no accommodations in activities to include him - he either sits on the floor like all the other kids or we will consider him "refusing to cooperate." Then blame him for not participating and being a bad student. RoxannaAutism Happens Re: ( ) Port St. Lucie boy - made CNN News! Some of the comments from readers say that the teacherwas "right on"! Guest guest
, Does the parents know their options on what they can do about the teacher ? like get a sped ed attorney, file a complaint, etc... I would assume not because this seemed to be escalating to this level without any evals, ABA, or an appropriate program for him. Seems like the parents and this child was left on their own without any knowledge of knowing of any resources for him. JMO Rose MacAllister <smacalli@...> wrote: I totally hear you. The meanest commentator asked me "why is this boy in a mainstream classroom?" after I told him he was being evaluated for Aspergers which is a form of autism. I told him Aspergers is a high-functioning form and with the right training and assistance, this child can do okay in a mainstream classroom. Guest guest
That is really frustrating to have to talk to people who are so clueless. I would not have even tried since it would make me crazy!!!!! I hate having to repeat myself, lol. One idea for anyone who tries the same thing in the future - if you find yourself facing a group of hostile ignorant morons like this, let them know the current rate of autism right now. Then, because they will not understand the significance of that being that they are so slow witted, let them know that the chances that this will affect them personally (kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews) or people that they love/know (co-workers, neighbors, church members, etc.) is fairly high and they should buy a clue and get informed before they shoot off their mouths. Some day in the future, they will be eating their words, all things being equal. It's always easy to be flippant about someone else's problem. In this case, I would be more cautious since this one is going to come back to bite them in the butt. It's just a fact. RoxannaAutism Happens Re: ( ) Port St. Lucie boy - made CNN News!
