Guest guest
I have a 15yo son who was diagnosed a year and a half ago. He just returned from 16 months in a residential facility due to aggressive behaviors. Before he left he was in a self-contained class for students with emotional disorders because he was diagnosed ADHD and bipolar. He did okay in school because he had a very small class. At the RTC he was in the small on-campus private school for the end of 7th grade and most of 8th grade. He did very well in the small setting. In February he was transferred to the local middle school. At first his grades dropped, but once he settled in he was able to bring them up to As and Bs. Of course, he had Resource assistance and accommodations such as extra time and an AlphaSmart to type because his handwriting is so bad. He will be starting at the high school here in the fall. It will be interesting to see how he does. In the past our biggest problem was his behavior and not wanting to do homework and studying. I hope that we can get him on a good schedule and have a good year. We have been very fortunate that he did not fall between the cracks. But that is mainly because I am a special ed teacher and know who and what to fight. Hello All, I just joined in hopes of finding other parents that might be able to help understand how to get through the dreaded "teen" years. I have a daughter who was diagnosed 3 years ago with AS that will be turning 15 on June 17th. We have just finished her freshman year of school doing independant studies. We had hoped that would work, but it didn't. She is now enrolled next year in the continuation school program where she will attend 4hrs a day. Its just so hard to understand how our children can just fall through the cracks when really what they need is extra help (Any words of wisdom?
