I think you need to call the hospital or the crisis center...I truly believe you need to intervene with more help right now....your son needs the help and he is holding you baisically hostage in your home....get help now before you actually melt down yourself.

Hi everyone. I am not new here but need to use this more. It seems really hard to get on the computer - always dealing with my son or asleep! He has been in the mental health system since nursery and finally after continual banging my head against a brick wall we were told age 6 he had 'aspects' of Asperger's,ADHD and dyspraxia. We were given no follow up and they dismissed the fact he had tried to strangle himself and said he wanted to die and was beating me up on a regular basis. The school would not recognise such a vague diagnosis and I was left with no help or recognition. I had to fight with my family who thought he was just badly behaved. In the end I reported the psychiatrist and demanded another proper assessment from some one else. We had the beginning of this before Xmas with a psychiatrist who actually took his time to ask me questions and listen. He thinks Aspergers or high functioning

autism and ADHD which he will prescribe medication for but he wants to see us again and get feedback from the school first. The school plays down all his behaviours as he is better at school and they say he is copying his Aspergers friend! I did mention bipolar to the psychiatrist as he seems to have the symptoms and I suffer from depression and his dad (who is now dead was an alcoholic and depressive and may have had bipolar). He said he didn't want to diagnose at this age (he is 7) but he would watch it.I had to lock the knives away as he said he wanted to stab himself and didn't like life - it was too hard.I am feeling very low at moment as Adam and I both have a genetic syndrome and it is degenerative. I feel very low when he is attacking me alternating with saying sorry and refuses to leave the house. It is also heart breaking when he wants to die and tries to hurt himself.I am on my own as

his step dad is an alcoholic and also couldn't cope with Adam. Just thought I would get it all out. Been stuck in the house for nearly three weeks with him and slowly going mad!!

Does he have an IEP at school? How did his dad die, if I may ask? Is the psych taking his threats of killing himself seriously? What is the plan for dealing with that? What state are you in? You really need to find some respite care of some sort and maybe we can help you find something in your state?

The school needs to provide help with or without a dx. You can request a full eduational eval if he does not already have an IEP.

He does have an IEP at school but more recently it seems to be focusing less on emotional/behaviour issues and more on the physical dyspraxia things eg handwriting. It doesn't even say ADHD or Aspergers on it! The school home liason lady seems to think I am making it all up despite the bruises, bite marks and scratches I have shown her. The new psychiatrist is much better but no one seems to treat the threats that seriously which alarms me. Only my friends who see him at home seem to understand.

His dad died suddenly from pneumoccocal meningitis. He was on a life support machine for 7 days and then was brain dead so had to turn it off - a very traumatic time. Fine to dead in 10 days.

If this new assessment offers nothing I really don't know what I will do as I can't live like this much longer and he is so so clingy and controlling. Child onset bipolar disorder doesn't seem to be recognised in England!

I'm so sorry for your loss, . That must have been such a hard situation to deal with, to say the least! I wonder if you can video tape him at home here and there? Then you can show people what you mean and what his problems are? I don't know how a person can ignore bite marks. Does the school/home liason lady have a supervisor you could talk to? You just have to keep talking to people, go to their supervisors and not give up! I did find this web site located in England --> http://www.bipolaraware.co.uk/ You might try to chat with this person and see what resources are available out there. If you could connect with a doctor who specializes in this or other parents in your situation over there, it might help. Just keep asking questions!
