Maybe contact the Ca Dept of Public Instruction? (DPI)....

They may be able to tell you something.

Or......could you ask any neighbors? Just casually ask how they feel about their school?

Or......Calif's State Austism Society? Maybe they have some info on which schools are known to be better?

Good luck.

Does anyone know where I can get info on a public school? My ex wants my 6th grader to go back to public school (I homeschooled for the last 3 months of 5th grade through a charter homeschool and my ex doesn't think he learned anything) I want to switch to California Virtual Academy but the ex wants him to go to the middle school by my new house since we moved to a new area. So I am trying to gather info on the school to better defend why I want to homeschool. I tried to email some questions to the school but have not heard back. I wonder if I can get any info during the summer time? I went to their website but it wasn't very helpful.

You will have much better results going in and talking to people. Our

jr high has a least one of the school administrators " covering " all

summer. Since it is summer, I would just go in or call and ask if

there is someone you can talk to about the school. If they start

asking you what you want, say you want to come in and talk to them and

see the school (you want to be able to pick up as many vibes as you

can). They will have a course description publication, curriculum

tracks, athletic teams and other activities available, school rules,

school district rules they can give you at the very least. And I

agree with the poster who suggested asking around town. There is

nothing wrong with interviewing them just like you were checking out a

private school (there are lots of books on that), although they

probably won't be as forthcoming.

I found this article and it is all the authors words

Socialization: the Dictionary Definition

by Madrone

I've always felt vaguely uncomfortable when someone asks about

socialization. I realized that I'd never heard the word before I

started homeschooling and that I didn't really know what it meant.

So I decided to look it up.

I found it under the word " socialize " . Here's the definition:

1. To place under government or group ownership or control; establish

on a socialistic basis.

2. To fit for companionship with others; make sociable in attitude or

manners.

3. To convert or adapt to the needs of society.

4. To take part in social activities.

I was thrown by definition #1. Do we really want children to be owned

or controlled by the government? To be socialized like medicine or

railroads? I assume this is not what people mean when they talk about

homeschooled youngsters receiving insufficient socialization, but I

could be wrong.

If definition #1 is what people mean by socialization, then I'm

afraid homeschooled children aren't going to be nearly as socialized

as public schooled youngsters. Actually, I'd be more afraid of the

people who want to socialize children in such a fashion. When I read

definition #1, a chill went down my spine. Definition #3 bothered me

too, seeming more suited to institutions than human beings.

Definitions 2 and 4 don't bother me at all. I'd like my children to

be fit companions for other people. I'd like them to have manners and

treat other people courteously and in a friendly manner. I want them

to take part in social activities, to enjoy being part of the

community.

I just don't see how children need to go to school to accomplish

definitions 2 and 4.

So, someone tell me, please, what is this property of " socialization "

and how is it conferred by the schools and not in any other way?

I know this topic comes up over and over again, but it's really

bothering me now. I think that part of what may be meant by

socialization is definitions 1 and 3, that people want our children

to become good cogs in the machine, mindless members of the mass

culture.

Forgive my melodrama. When I think of children who are taught to

blindly obey authority and to fit in, I think of the horrors of Nazi

Germany and the Stalin regime. I don't want to see that happen in

this country.

My husband suggested that we make up T-shirts with the definitions of

socialization on them and hand them out to people who ask about

socialization. It's a thought.

You should call the director of student services and talk to them about sped services. Or you can usually find the principal of the school if you search. Our school has summer hours and they take a few weeks off as well for vacation. You can also try finding your local autism group and asking people there what they think of the school.

I believe the first definition is political.

I wouldn't worry what other people think. If you want to homeschool, then do so. It's your business and not anyone else's. If they ask inappropriate questions, just say, "That's not your concern."

I didn't mean defending homeschooling for other people necessarily. I meant to have a better defense in order to convince my ex that homeschooling is the right thing for him. Ultimately I will be the one making the decision whether he likes it or not, however, we do get along great and I want to keep it that way by providing a good reason for homeschooling. Ahhh, I didn't catch that part. I got behind in reading posts again.

You could always say, "Let me give it a try for this year and see how he does?" It might be easier to show him it works than to try to convince him it might work.
