Guest guest
> > Our doctor was not high on the idea of a language eval. at this point because my son is highly verbal and has an extensive vocaulary. And our doctor's remarks were that he would need a lang. therapist that was trained in this, not just any SLT, which I think is true. And how many of those are there really? Probably not many as this is somewhat unusual. For whatever it is worth, I was never able to find an SLP that could help with my now 14yo Asperger son's language issues. A lot of them would claim they could, but once we got into it were just doing simplistic exercises with him that went over stuff he could figure out for himself. Meanwhile, they didn't know how to deal with the higher level, more subtle problems he had. It's been a matter of me educating myself so I can help him at an everyday level, and trying to get his teachers to do the same--no comment on that last one. As far as evaluations go, I think the paired autism evaluation called ADOS and ADI-R is the gold standard. There are not very many people licensed to give it and you may have to travel, but it is supposed to really get down to the more subtle hard to diagnose communication stuff. Every parent I know has been happy with it. We haven't been able to do it because the doctor who gives it at our children's hospital doesn't take our insurance. I'm looking into participating in one of their research studies though, which means we would get it for free. Ruth
