Hi all

I am new to this group. Don’t

have an official Aspergers diagnosis yet, but I strongly believe that is the

case with my 6 year old son. He has been officially diagnosed with ADHD

and OCD, with recognized anxiety and gifted traits.

here are a million things I want to talk

about and ask, but I thought I would respond while this thread was going on

about genetics…

Noah: ADHD/OCD/Significant “at risk”

Aspergers traits

Me: gifted, very mildly OCD (undiagnosed)

Dad: ADD

Aunt: Bipolar

Mom’s father: Bipolar (late in life)

gifted

Mom’s paternal cousin #1: Aspergers,

Tourettes, gifted

Mom’s paternal cousin #2: ADHD,

Bipolar, gifted

Mom’s paternal uncle: Severe OCD

(disabling)

Even though my son tested “at risk”

and “significant” in most Asperger traits, the developmental

pediatrician wouldn’t diagnose it Aspergers. He wanted to call it “ADD

and Auditory Processing Disorder.” The clinical psychologist (phD) who

sees him regularly gave the ADHD and OCD. I have read the book about

Misdiagnosing when Gifted is involved. Everyone that knows him believes him to

be gifted but the school doesn’t think he’ll qualify for the

program because he doesn’t test well because he doesn’t pay

attention well. SO FRUSTRATED!! No one—teacher, speech

therapist, psychologist—agrees with the Auditory Processing Disorder from

the doctor who saw him one time for 15 minutes. I have read up on

Aspergers and he fits almost everything. He’s pretty high

functioning, but his perseveration is extreme and is extremely hampering his

potential.

I’ve called every child psychiatrist

in Phoenix and

no one will see a child under 12! Yet, the pediatrician won’t even

discuss anything without him seeing a psychiatrist or developmental

pediatrician. The school wants forms filled out by same. AARRGGH!!

He will be 7 next month. I just got his

IEP in place. Anyone have thoughts to share?

Okay, I'm curious.

He he. Reading your post, Mina, made me

remember that I didn't add the OTHERS in our fam that have similar

traits. he he.

Me - OCD

Husband - was listed as Hyper as a child

My mom - depression, OCD

My grampa - would be a classic AS if around.

He would line everything up, grade everything with percentages, was a

Tool & Dye maker, rarely ventured OUT. Built his own home by

himself and obsessively fished. Would whistle constantly. he he.

So I have noticed that there are at least a few of you

on this group

that have more than one child with dx of as or other ld. I am

curious, from a purely genetic standpoint, if you have more than one

spec needs child are they biological children?

I recently was in a meeting with the special ed director of my sons

school. He was asked a question about why dx of autism were on the

rise. He said that there are a lot of theories out there about that

but one that he mentioned caught my attention.

The theory is basicly that people who have elements of AS or HFA tend

to gravitate toward similar fields or interests (think computer

techies or engineers). They then meet and marry similar

personalities and have kids therefore passing on these traits.

That theory plus the fact that it seems autism spectrum runs in

families and the fact that my son definitly has some intensified

traits that my husband and I have makes me wonder.

So just me and my curiosity are wondering if any of you have more

than one bio child that is on the spectrum or in other ways LD?
