Jan, you will be surprised how helpful everything is when you write it down. I was also told by my skills teacher to get my son one of those Hugh desk calendars and hang it on the door just for him. He needs to jot his notes on that. he is 11. He also still forgets things but he is so much better at packing or remembering his needed stuff. he's losing/forgetting things less. His skills teacher said, first he has to learn it, then get into a habit of doing this, with writing everything down and checking it. then it becomes routine. the best part is, he can use this through high school , college and adulthood. here is a link for CAPT. these testing help us so much. they put on their recommendations, during test, my son needs a quite room, they said which ear he hears best from, the teacher needs to speak into a stereo type head set, and he needs to sit in the front of the class. he needs

to continue speech etc... I can't remember everything on those papers but it was very helpful. the best thing about a CAPT testing is you can go back 1 year later to see if there is any progress. Also at the place that does CAPT testing, they can also do a pragmatics testing as well. just let them know when you schedule the apt. I am saving this! I love the method you used to teach your son to clean the room. We are sort of doing this with my son. MY son is an only child and we have always done things for me (bad move on our part). So now when he asks for something, I say, come I am going to show you how. My son has an IEP and the teachers are suppose to help him too with organization. It works sometimes and other times no. We have a complete set of his books at home which helps if he forgets his. He has forgotten his study sheets so we at least have the books to study from. But my questions is what is CAPT???? That'swhen it connected with him that he needs a swim suit. I was told todo all

these steps so he can think of what he has to do. Now I'm toldto have a laminated list that is something like this: > Swimming - and have everything on that list of what he needs tobring to pack.> football - list everything on that list what he needs to have toplay football.> and the same for school, church, or anything else we do all needsa separate list. Sadly, a big part of the reason why I have done so muchstudying/observing on Asperger is because we get very little help fromschool. He has a 504 plan with some supports for his executivedysfunction, things teachers checking and signing his agenda everyday, etc. Some of his 504 plan supports are good in theory,

but sincehis teachers are all regular classroom teachers and no special edstaff are involved, pretty much nobody understands what they need tobe doing--and they don't take kindly to advice from me. So, I'mpretty much trying to coordinate special ed from home, hiring my ownspeech/OT therapist/tutors etc. and trying to figure out what we needto be working on. Since he doesn't have special ed, my therapists arenot allowed to talk to the teachers. It is a daily thing I spendhours on every week with only minimal results since it isn't beingdone right. Very frustrating. I know many on the list go through thesame thing. What are the strategies your using at home with him? Honestly, just being patient and giving him time, and being veryexplicit about everything. I can't say as I feel like I am doinggreat with him. This summer we are working on ADLs (Activities ofdaily life), trying to get him going more on personal

hygiene, chores, fixing himself things to eat, etc. Our OT has helped us put togethera little program. We are working on one or two things at a time. I'mjust trying to get him DOING things, and hopefully I can get himthinking about doing at least a little something on his owninitiative. So far, I dunno... We are in between speech therapists right now, and I haven't been ableto find one that is a good fit. So, that is something I'm hoping toget together by the end of the summer at least. I'm getting to whereI'm thinking I may have to go ahead and start his speech therapymyself, with his brother perhaps. I'm on a waiting list for a placethat is supposed to be very good, but it may be a long wait.Ruth

What is this? Can I look at one online or somewhere? I'm looking for

an appropriate calendar for my kids.

I found a great planner, by the way, to replace the school-issued one.

It has boxes to check off each assignment, places for due dates, and

more planning space for projects. If anyone is interested, let me

know and I'll post the link.

Ruth, I was told to just buy a desk calendar. the kind you buy at office max and any office supply store. it's the kind with the big boxes, and you can see the whole Month on each page. you also can create your own " check off boxes " or choir box sheet " by just making one to your special needs, then eliminate it. also, the key idea for those charts are to put them in an area that your child uses all the time. ***ours is the dining rm. They do their homework on the table and its near the exit door. so our exit door is like a message and reminder place for the notes. My son has to check out this door that has all his activities, calendar of events etc.. first thing in the morning after he uses the bathroom. then he knows what the plans are for the day. Hope this helps, if not, maybe others can write in their ideas and you will be able to decide which ones work best for your needs.

As for not hearing the alarm clock, they make alarm clocks that vibrate the bed for deaf and hard of hearing people. That may work.

Jan, I had to jump in here. don't be surprised if he does forget to look at the list...My son forgets. I still have to ask if he checked the list?. but with my son, when I make a list for him, he will memorize it to the T. He can pack his bags and not forget anything. BUT, if something changes for the day or it's different. he'll need more prompting or a separate list for that day taped up on the door. So remember to be patient when he needs a reminder to check that list. because it will work, just takes time. My skills teacher said: first he needs to get into a new habit to read the list, then get into that routine, then it will be automatic. My son will need list for the rest of his life. I am now starting to work on him making his own list. Please let us know how everything works out. Roserushen janice <jrushen@...>
