Guest guest
That is fantastic! My child had a para in kindergarten and then didn't have one from 1st to 3rd grade, just a aid that they could hire for cheap. The school system finally started attending meetings for autism training and discovered they needed to have a specialists come and observe and make a plan for him. This has been the most wonderful year yet. He has his own classroom with little noise and has made tons of progress. Good Luck to you- I bet this will be a very positive experience for your child and for you. Lori From: jannalynn6 <jannalynn6@...>Subject: ( ) OMG - he got his para! Date: Thursday, February 12, 2009, 9:08 PM We had our PPT today and we were all ready to demand that para for . At our last meeting, the principal stated that " didn't come to kindergarten with a para, so it will be much more difficult to get him one now." I was all set today with "well, he didn't come with an umbrella either, but it doesn't mean he won't need it!" I still can not believe it - the school recognized 's need and actually placed a couple of paras in the room on a rotational basis to see how would do. He did so well these last couple of weeks, that the team wants to add a para to 's IEP! They wanted to know if it was o.k. with us!!! HAHAHAHAHA - that's ALL I've wanted for the last several weeks. Here I was all set for the fight of a lifetime with the school and they had already put this in place. I love our school system. Now he will not have a full time para - only during academics (that's really when he needs the most assistance staying on task and refocusing). The school is concerned that he will become too dependent on the para if it's full time. And really the goal is to get him to become MORE independent over time, but for now, he has exactly what he needs! I'm so happy! And I just wanted to share with you all as you all have been very helpful with advise over the last couple of weeks. We'll have another PPT closer to the end of the school year to plan for first grade - I'll keep you all posted on 's progress. Thank you, Janna
Guest guest
Janna, Yeah! Great news! As for him becoming dependent on a para, that is not a good reason to deny him the para when he needs it. Make sure to tell them that if the para is trained appropriately, she/he will know not to help him too much...to know when to cue him and when to stay back. It is the para's abilities that affect his "dependence" meter, not his. So put that on the para's shoulders where it belongs and don't let them use it as a way to deny him what he needs.
