Guest guest
Here in Texas we have a state agency that helps people with disabilities get employment. It is www.dars.state.tx.us .. Maybe there is something similar in your state. For jobs like this, one typically applies in person. That is probably why he is getting so little response to the phone calls. One looks around for help wanted signs in windows (or in the newspaper/online), then you go in with resume/contacts in hand, prepared to interview. They often hire the first person they talk to that seems good for the job. In the advertisement, they will usually say what day(s) and time(s) they are interviewing, so that is when you show up. The earlier the better! If you know anybody who works where he wants to work, you can also ask them who is good to talk to. Then, find out when that person is working, go in when they are there (try to figure out from the friend when would be a good time), and ask to speak to them. Then, you ask them if they need anyone. Again, you go in dressed appropriately, resume/contacts in hand, ready to interview. He needs to be coached to the point where he can walk in by himself. They will not be hiring anyone accompanied by their mother. If he's game for the phone calls, he's probably game for this, so my suggestion would be to have him take a go at it and go from there. If it turns out he is not ready for this, some employment agencies have job search preparatory classes one can take. If you have the money, you can even hire a job search coach. There are also things you can get for free or close to it. You might want to ask around at some employment agencies. Ruth
Guest guest
I am so sorry to hear this!! I was enjoying his success stories from being there. First, make sure they give you the federal law in writing. Make sure they are not making it up because they don't want to deal with whatever. Also, it would seem really brainless to provide the training and then not help him get a job. But then, this is a gov't program so perhaps that is exactly how it works? I would find out for sure. Ask them to help you find a mentor. They have to know places that he could intern at or what is the point of their training? Try finding someone at Job Corps who will be willing to answer your questions or help you network with someone who can. RoxannaYou're UniqueJust like everyone else... ( ) Son leaving JobCorps, help! We just found out in the past two weeks that son will have to leave JobCorps, Culinary Arts, by end of April. He has completed his vocational stuff in this and is not allowed to stay beyond 60 days (Federal Law according to them). We were planning on him being able to stay and do another vocation, the Business Technology, but they said there is a 3-4 month wait list and current students at JobCorps go to the BOTTOM of the list. It took eight months for him to get in the first time. So, we have begun a job search and I am looking for suggestions to help. The amount of direction and training towards looking for a job coming from JC has been a lot less than I expected. Actually, it feels like they can't push him out the door fast enough.Any one had any luck setting up a mentoring situation? That is where he would do best. Frequently, he has to be shown something more than one time to retain it. That was one of the things that kept him from going on to the Advanced Training with JobCorps. Once he learns though, he can do it well.He has been doing a lot of calling. He does not difficulty picking up the phone and talking to someone, a good thing. But he is just as likely to launch into asking for a job from a waiter that answers the phone as talking to their answering machine! It has been a total deadend. He is going to need entry level. But he doesn't even get that far, it is just a curt, "we are not hiring and we are not taking resumes," and they hang up.So, any suggestions for him are welcome on finding a restaurant/cooking job!Sue in TN No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG - www.avg.com Version: 8.0.237 / Virus Database: 270.11.13/1999 - Release Date: 03/13/09 05:59:
Guest guest
In NC, the state agency is Vocational Rehabilitation for those with disabilities, provide job coaching, helping to find employment, etc. Would seem each state would have an agency with county sites for this, just different names. > > Here in Texas we have a state agency that helps people with disabilities get > employment.
