Hi . Way back when, I had a " sock putter-on-er " made that I will try

and describe. It's two pieces of x-ray film cut in the shape of a half

circle and put together with a snap system. Then there is a long strap

attached to each flat end of the film. I roll it up, put the sock in,

sprinkle a little baby powder in (it's that sweaty dwarf problem!!), put the

thing on the floor (best of it's carpetted), stick my foot in and pull the

device up. I then adjust the sock with a reacher...and then I'm in

business!! I have since seen something similar in catalogs like Sammons, but

they look big...maybe they can be cut down.

Good luck!!

Hooray!

This morning I slept late - so I decided now or never. Got socks and

did much the way both of you did - i.e., left foot over right knee and visa

versa, except I did it lying on my back. It worked! I am now

sock-independent!

Best,

Okay, I just have to share on the sock issue...I too got tired of asking for

help with my socks. I have a hard time putting my foot on my knee, I'm just

too stiff so instead I sit on my bed and bring my foot up just the opposite

way to the bed and then slide my sock on, which I have slid over one hand

....(if you can visualize this, big toe is on the bed, little toe pointing to

the ceiling, knees touching each other) It works, except with pantyhose, and

I just try to avoid those all together. Here's to the simple sock pleasures!

Best to all, Dana

Pantyhose or any hose--you gotta be kidding. That's

out of the question. After what all of us have been

through, who cares if our legs are bare? If anyone

gets offended by us going without hose, that's their

problem. I could care less. I still cannot shave my

legs--can others do that yet? I usually wear slacks

to cover my legs, but when warm weather arrives, maybe

my husband or daughter will shave them once in a

while. I want to swim as soon as the new pool opens,

so I'll let hubbie have that job; besides, it's more

enjoyable to let him do it. :)

You might also try going to have them waxed. The person who did my legs was

surprised I didn't flinch or cry out--hey, the pain was nothing for those

of us who have had back problems!

Didn't hurt at all. Comparable to snapping a rubber band at you.

Actually being in a wheelchair I can tell you that one. They have a device

with 2 ropes on it... it looks like a scoop.. or a half circle.. you place

the sock on this toss it past your foot.. use the ropes to guide and pull up

your sock. It is very handy for socks.. now shoes are a different matter...

havcent seen anything to help there.

Hi . I am diastrophic too and have had a sock putter on-er for about 30

years that looks a lot like the " sock aids " that have been mentioned here.

Mine was made at the local rehab hospital and is made of a half circle of

x-ray film a little wider than my foot, with a long strap around it in a loop.

I usually sprinkle some baby powder inside as I have sweaty feet, shimmy my

foot in there and pull the device and viola'...my sock is on! I think these

other mass produced devices would work too.

Good luck!!

Hi all,

Regarding the sock problems. I really hate socks and have always had a

problem finding socks I like. Mostly because they are always to tight

or they creep down and bunch up under my heel. I recently discovered

that the " fuzzy " socks that they sell this time of year (at least in

Wisconsin) are super comfy. They are very soft. They are a very loose

weave so they are not tight and they seem to stay in place. I wear

mine inside out so there is no seam to feel. My AS son loves them

also. You can find them at Walmart. They sell them in a two pack in

all different colors for about $3.00.
