Guest guest
Will do, Ruth. Good luck! Go get 'em! "Over-optimism is waiting for you ship to come in when you haven't sent one out." From: r_woman2 <me2ruth@...> Sent: Friday, February 27, 2009 8:45:36 AMSubject: ( ) Please keep my son in your thoughts... Today is D-Day. We have our 504 meeting where he will probably bereferred to the Autism Team and something has to happen with the 504since nobody is following over half of it. I know they'll find someway to attack me, as they always do. So, not looking forward to it. Took a day off work yesterday, and finalized getting all mydocumentation and thoughts together. Hoping my husband will come, butnever know until the last minute since he has serious health issues. I think what I hate most about these meetings is how they will neverreally let you know what they plan on discussing exactly before themeeting--they just dump everything on you and you really have to thinkon your feet. Very unnerving. Anyway please keep us in yourthoughts, send us a quick prayer--whatever is comfortable for you!Ruth

Guest guest
My thoughts are with you today. I hope your meeting goes well. I remember when I used to dread my son's meetings. I felt very vulnerable and attacked as well as like I was under evaluation as a parent and my skills were up for evaluation. I'm very grateful that things have improved over the years. Have you ever asked for an agenda in advance? It doesn't sound like the team you have is the best to work with so the request might not be so warmly received, but if you had one you might have a little more confidence before going into the meeting and feel less blindsided. The team that I work with is great - but it took several years and lots of work to get to that point. They send me a copy of the IEP before the meeting and I keep in frequent contact with the special ed teacher responsible for the IEP and request frequent updates. This has helped me gain confidence and feel less attacked and on the defensive during the meetings. I think it has also helped their perception of me. They know I'm a strong advocate for my son and I have also proved I want to help when I can and support them too. I wish you the best. > > Today is D-Day. Guest guest
Ruth, next time you are scheduled for a meeting, write up your own agenda. You don't have to always be surprised by what they want to discuss. I would think you'd have a general idea of what is going to be discussed. Write it down, make a list and then you can jot down key points you want to make for each topic. I always wrote my own agenda and it was not so much that I wanted to follow my agenda vs. their agenda - it was that I wanted to make sure to hit all the topics I felt were important and also to make all the points I wanted to make during the meeting. So it helped me. I could check off each subject as we got to it and had notes so I could say what I felt was important to say. ly, you will be more organized and better prepared by doing this. If anything new pops up and you don't know what to say about it, request a meeting to discuss it at another date/meeting and tell them you will need some time to think it through. Sometimes you can also say, "I need to discuss that with my dh...or doctor...or therapist...or my friends online <g>" Whatever - you can always reserve comment on anything they throw at you. I am behind reading emails (what's new?) but I hope your meeting went ok and I will probably find out when I get some of these read. RoxannaYou're UniqueJust like everyone else...
