My name is , My son is 5 years old and has had many

" issues " he has not been dx yet, I have taken him so many places we

live in the DFW Area in Texas, He was seen at The Child Study Center

and I got the impression that was not sitting in the corner

rocking and flapping his arms and he could talk ( not great) so he

wasn't on the spectrum at all, I really feel that he has AS. He starts

Kindergarden in 21 days I have warned the school that we are having

him evaluated at different places and such and they keep making it

sound like I am a over paranoid parent that doesn't want to drop off

there child, I have 2 older kids that are in that school system and I

have never had a problem leaving them at all. When I told them I

thought he had AS they told me if he was DX that there independent

person would come in and evaluate him also, Does this mean if he is dx

that someone at the school can also do a dx and say no and he will get

no help? Sorry I have so many Question and no clue how to fit them all

in, I have been trying for 3 years to get someone to listen to me and

see something is not right at all, they seem to want to pass it all

off on OT, PT, and Speech.

Thanks for reading!

Does your son have any of the other signs like lack of eye contact,

inabiltiy to socialize with other kids, can't stand any over

stimulation, my son also had a problem with change i.e. when i threw

out an old couch he went bizark. He also use to hide in a corner and

cover his ears if a place was too loud. He does flap his hands and

other little stimualtion things but I can tell you it can take a lot

of misdiagnoses before yu get the right one. We noticed signs when he

was younger but then he went to pre-k, he got kicked out because he

would attack the teachers and it was sacring the other kids. The

teacher spoke to me about seeing someone and I did and they diagnosed

him with adhd and put hime on ritalin. Th ritalin amde his behavior

worse so I took hime off of that. When he entered kindergarten he had

a mre experienced teacher so there were no problmes, however later

she would come to tell me that she did notice signs in my son, and

that she just new how to control the situation. Anyway to make a long

story short when the school can't control the child anymore that is

when they'll intervene when he becomes a diruption in class. it

wasn't until 1st grade that they began sending me to all these

doctors, and Iq tests, and whatever else to have him diagnosed and

that's when the IEP's start. They wnated to keep my son mainstreamed

until they realized he was a flight risk and they didn't have the man

power to keep him safe. I would look for an early intervention

program,if you don't want to wait to see how he performs in school.

My niece has issues but she is undiagnosed, however they don't do

much for her because she is performing well in school. She does get

counseling, and speech but that's about it. I did see a specialist

once that sent for genetic tests and dealt with child development if

I can rememember her specialty exactly i will get back to you.

I don't think so ...because the school psychologist said my son was ADHD and the private practice we go to first dx him PDD nos...and then 4 months later dx him AS. My son gets services and they go by the outside DX...which was more thorough.....we were seen by the school psychiatrist for about 1/2 hour and the outside Psychiatrist saw my son for over an hour each time.

When you son gets into school, write a letter stating all your concerns and request in writing that you want him test thoroughly. The school has 60 days to comply from the date they receive the letter. Don't waste time. And, don't let them skip any testing....it is your right. Call you state depart. of education and get a copy of your legal rights. Usually when the schools know you are educated as far as your rights...they cooperate as they don't want any problems...and if you need to you can always get an advocate...and they know the laws.

Hope this was helpful. I just wish I had know something was not right in kindergarten but at least I learned by 3rd grade even though it was the wrong dx...he did start to get some services.

Wow...it was great that your son's K teacher noticed things. My son's teacher was new at teachig and I think a little overwhelmed in that she had just gotten divorced. In first grade my son would be distracted by everything....she would pull him back into the lesson by calling on him...and every time he would answer correctly. She was always amazed. Second grade he gravitate to the wrong type of kids and when they were allowed to read by themsleves...he would crawl under her desk. It wasn't till 3rd grade and I was reading this book because my house was so choatic ....it was called From Choas to Calm...it was my son thru and thru...so I brought in rating scales for the teachers and his teacher says to me...Thank Goodness...i noticed it the first day of school....so why didn't anyone ever mention it to me. Anyways...my son

flapped his hands...sort of stopped that but wrings his hands when he is excited. He too has fits when we gave away our coffee table and end tables...he cried....he hated it when his father sold his car and got a new one. When he gets hurt ...he runs and hides...he doesn't come to me for hugs??? The eye contact I never noticed....until now. But he is persistent...he doens't take no for an answer. And, he is constantly asking questions...I use to say when does this WHY period end...well it didn't. Even when we are watching a movie ...he asks questions and we tell him it is annoying. And he has no patience....everything is immediate...I never notice trouble with friends until 4th or 5th grade when kids stopped playing with him or calling and birthday invitations just stopped coming.

I agree ...get your child tested early...the earlier the better....don't settle....

Hi . I'm from Texas too, although I'm in the Houston area. I

have a 13yo dx with AS. I have heard of this happening, so yes.

However, if you get a good evaluation from a well-qualified autism

specialist, IME, you shouldn't have any problems.

You have to do a school eval to get special ed services. You should

request one in writing and provide your evals so they can use them as

part of the input. Call your school district to find out who to send

it to and if there is a form to fill out. You must provide a

reasonably detailed reason as to why the testing needs to be done and

list what areas you want tested. They may well try to do as little as

possible since it is not their idea to do the testing. But everything

that you put in writing, by law they have to either test or give you a

written reason why not in a reasonable time frame (forget what it is

right now). I've never seen a school anywhere try to not comply with

this. Also, my school district did not try to repeat anything except

the IQ test and individual achievement tests.

Be wary of the school eval. Theoretically they are supposed to do a

thorough eval but they don't. If you don't do your own evaluations so

they can have reasonably detailed info, you may well not get good

results. Garbage in, garbage out. We did all our own educational,

neuropsych, speech and OT evals. The school repeated the educational

(they actually did a better job on that) and did a behavioral

consultation. They tried to say nothing was wrong until we did all

our evaluations. Now we're in a place where we have a 504 but they

are still denying an IEP because our son is not consistently

flunking--has a highish IQ. It is an ongoing process. I've been

getting together a private SPED team little by little, so it gets

better and better even without a lot of help from the school. Still

not really good though. And even with insurance coverage, it gets

expensive.

We didn't get our official dx until a little over a year ago though,

and I had just figured it out myself about a year before that. He

didn't start having unmanageable symptoms until about age 10. Some AS

kids are like that. We had no idea something was seriously wrong.

Welcome to the group!

Ruth – I don’t understand this statement. We live in the

Houston area and when my son was in the public school system he had an IEP and

his IQ is very high. Could you please explain this to me? Thanks.

Hi Jess,

My name is and I have a son who just turned 10 a few days ago

and he has aspherger syndrome. Dont give up. If you believe there is

something wrong with your son then unfortunately there probably is. I

knew from the time my son was a toddler that he had something wrong

and every one said I was being paranoid too, but I wasnt. I had him

to several doc's before we got him dx. But once he was dx the school

did their evaluation and didnt think he had AS either, but because

he was dx by a doctor they had to treat him as a child with AS. Now

that they know him and have seen him in action they know the dx is

correct. Thats whats so hard is because our kids look so normal, and

people who dont see them every day dont notice their quirks and dont

see their meltdowns and dont deal with their OCD's and anxietys. My

son didnt talk till he was 3yrs old and that was only because he was

in speech therapy with a wonderful therapist who he saw 3 times a

week and if it wasnt for her breaking through his gibberish I dont

know if he ever would have talked. He could write words on a

magnadoodle and spell every street name he saw and draw every sign

and spell the names on them correctly at 3yrs but could not talk. How

weird was that?? I can only suggest that you get your son into a

speech therapist if he dosnt talk well or very much, and keep a

journal day to day of everything he does, and even video tape him if

he is doing something strange or having a meltdown. My son rocks and

bangs his head a hums still till this day. He has done this since he

was an infant. If your son does anything like this get it on video

and dont give up, get some great books and go to every doctor till

you find the right one. I wish you good luck and I hope this helps

just a little. This can be a great site most of the time. It helped

open my eyes to a few things. Feel free to email me individually if

you want to at ginak1117@.... Again, good luck to you, .

You can request that the school do an educational evaluation if you feel he is having problems at school. This would not be the exact same thing as evaluation somewhere else although they may do some of the same tests.
