Guest guest
We tried Prozac for anxiety for my son when he was 7 and he had very troubling (and out-of-character) behavior. He was throwing books up to knock the ceiling tiles out at school, he walked into the room I was in and said "I hate you, Mommy" in a sing-song voice, and picked up a handweight and hit our cat with it. That was enough for me. He never took another dose. He has taken meds for ADHD since he was 5 though. "Over-optimism is waiting for you ship to come in when you haven't sent one out." Guest guest
My daughter also took Prozac (when she was 13-14 years old). It helped with Anxiety but she stopped when she noticed side effects such as suicidal thoughts, school work also was diminished. She does exercise (treadmill walking), it calms her down somehow. Also, trying to focus in small goals, of course each child is different but I am always worried about side effects, especially when we are talking about a child as young as 6/7. Guest guest
My son, (16) is currently on Prozac and has been for the past 5 years with good results. He started out on 10mg and went to 15 and was on 15mg for a long time. He is now up to 20mg/daily. It was mainly for his OCD issues. He went through a whole bunch of medications during 6th-grade that were mainly destructive after a few weeks. We started on Paxil at one time and it was the difference in night and day for him, but once it leveled off, and we tried to increase it, it became nightmarish. But the Prozac has been good. But again, mainly for his OCD/anxiety issues. -Melinda

Guest guest
Thanks Jill. It does sound like starting meds slowly in small doses seems to be the key. A year ago, I was against meds at all, so… Just goes to show you! That’s great that your son found what works for him. Does he work or go to college? From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Jill Kern Sent: Wednesday, March 25, 2009 5:44 AM Subject: ( ) Re: anyone tried prozac with their child? Dear Lori and others, My son (now 22) takes a tricyclic antidepressant called Imipramine daily. It's a medication that was used before the SSRIs were developed. He started out in 8th grade (I think -- it's hard to remember now) on a very small dose, 10 mg a day, when his impulsive behavior, especially when frustrated, was getting him into trouble. We noticed a difference right away, but that might be because the school started a new and more successful behavior management program right around that time. Later as he grew bigger and gained more weight, the pediatric neurologist he was seeing increased the dose to 20 mg a day, and still later, to 30 mg a day. It seems to have a calming effect and cuts down on verbal and physical tics. We have tried taking him off it from time to time to see if he still needs it, but it seemed to us that the tics returned. He doesn't combine it with any other med. We found out that combining it with other drugs that lower blood pressure is especially dangerous. We only tried an SSRI once -- at the suggestion of a doctor at Children's National Medical Center. It was Paxil. He took one dose, felt very dizzy, and said in a sad voice, " Why does it feel so strange? " We never gave him another dose. I think the point of all our experiences is that medication has different effects for different children. No one medication works for everyone. I think the safest approach is to start any med with a very small dose and increase it gradually, only if you see positive effects. Good luck! Guest guest
So the Prozac really seems to help with the OCD, huh? My uncle (57) has extreme OCD and started Prozac in his 40’s. I feel like it made him way worse. He clearly had some issues prior to Prozac, but was functioning, had a career, etc. Today, he is on disability and holed up in his house amongst piles of “stuff.” It scares me! Guest guest
I did see a report for pediatrics , children on Prozac. It said roughly 30 % report worsening of condition, 30% reported condition stayed the same, and 30% report improvement. My pediatrician showed me this list before I started my son on Prozac. The other medications like Zoloft and Paxil were roughly the same with pediatrics. I know there is ongoing research on the affects of many medications on the pediatric community and adult community, since the drug effects can be drastically different due to age and brain development.. I guess research, discuss with professional, start small, watch carefully, use good judgement. My son on Prozac became more and more violent and it was a very dramatic personality change. I had no problem knowing Prozac wasn't for him.Heide"Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.â€~ T.S. Guest guest
Our Psychiatrist said that the main medicinal treatment for OCD is Anxiety meds because it helps deal with the stress of the obsessions and compulsions. So if they are on a Anxiety med it may also help with OCD behaviors. Vickie > > So the Prozac really seems to help with the OCD, huh? My uncle (57) has > extreme OCD and started Prozac in his 40's. Guest guest
She never has tried any other medicine, just Prozac. She just turned 18 last month, a freshman in College, trying to do her best considering the circumstances. Academically doing extremely well. The only advice I could give you based on our experience is to chose the proper school setting. One of the best decisions I took was to pull her out of the public school system. The story is really long, it involves one year of home schooling. She replaced Prozac with exercise ( not extreme since she has very poor fine motor skills, she always was unhappy with PE and at the H.S. where she finished was allowed to do P.E. credits as "independent study" since she has a daily routine of moderate exercise for at least one hour) . The best part of the school I found was that it is small, religion and moral values are a must and it is very demanding on the academic side. Some of her OCD issues were a problem to be on time and I had to deal with the school as much as I could. They did not provide Spec. Ed. but most of the teachers were understanding and cared a lot for the students. She did very well in her SAT and now her academic advisor in College has told her she should take Honor Courses since she gets bored som etimes. I do not see medicines in her future and I confess that sometimes I wish to fine a medicine without side effects to control her anxiety level. She absolutely refuses to consider it and I understand her position. PATIENCE and take one day at a time. Ana ( ) anyone tr ied prozac with their child? Guest guest
Does the after care program people understand that medications can "help" but do not fix or cure behaviors? What are they doing now to manage behaviors? They should examine what behaviors he is having and then find ways to help change the situations or help him change his responses to those behaviors. Just giving him a pill will not fix the problem. He is still going to need guidance and help. Maybe they could bring in an autism expert to help them? Would they try something like that? And yes, we have tried meds before, prozac being one of them. Prozac did not help anything for our one ds. So we went on to a different med. Guest guest
Sounds like the Prozac doesn't help him. NOt all meds help all people all of the time. Each of us is different and the meds will affect us differently. Most people should be under the care and supervision of a doctor when they are taking any of these meds. If it is not working or causing other problems, you would call the doctor right away and take care of the problem.
