Guest guest
We went to: Institute for Educational Planning Dr. Mayville (child psychologist and director of IEP) Milford, CT 0646 203-876-5917 (phone) mayville@... Kim Baker is the secretary. The eval. was very expensive- $2,500. But if you get pre-approval for "out of network" mental health services prior to the eval., your insurance may pay for it. He did two mornings of eval. at his office and did a school observation/evaluation for us as well, which I think is always a critical component. And he will continue to follow my son over the next few years. I got Mayville's name from a friend who used him. He was instrumental in getting a 1:1 ABA trained aid for my friend in their school distrcit as well as getting her son into a spec. needs. pre-school program. Mayville attended the PPT via phone conference and my friend really felt that having him "at the meeting" made a big difference in the school's placement and the services they got for their son. I think the pro of using someone like Mayville is he will advocate with/for the parent to school districts, if he sees a need through testing. And it is my feeling, that school districts respect his opinion in our area. (Fairfield County) Mayville has a big heart and he will talk with you via phone (or you could e-mail him), prior to booking an appt., to see if he thinks he can be helpful to you and your son. The only con is it took him 8-10 weeks to give us the final written report, so it will take several months to get this completed. Hope it's helpful to you and your son. Best wishes. I have a list of doctors from my insurance plan but don't know who would be best. We have tried a couple with no luck in helping my son. I live in New Haven county. I know Yale has the child study center but I understand they have a 3 year waiitng list. I need help for him now as he is already a freshman in high school and we have been struggling for all these years with school and behavior issues. i feel like he is running out of time for help with school issues. Guest guest
We too looked in to the Yale Child Study Center and were put on a LOOOOONNNNGGGG wait list, our name eventually did pop up and we went forward with that testing as well, but in the meantime, I spoke with my pediatrician to see if a developmental pediatrician could help. We go to Pediatric Healthcare Associates - they have offices in Fairfield, Trumbull, Huntington, Bridgeport, and Southport. There is a developmental pediatrician right in their Bridgeport office - Dr. Chessin - when my regular pediatrician said " but it may be a 6 to 8 week wait " - I laughed and said - " it's better than the 18 month wait at Yale. " Dr. Chessin is VERY knowledgable and very well respected within the local school systems. He will go to bat for you with your school system if he must. We did wind up paying out of pocket - even though my pediatric group is part of the insurance, the behavioural evaluation (or however they labeled it) wound up not being covered - so it was about $475 out of pocket, but that wasn't too bad in the grand scheme of things. To put it in perspective, my kids were on Husky when we started our wait on the Yale list, but the time our name came up, we have different insurance, that Yale didn't accept!!! My choice was - go somewhere else and maybe have to wait another 18 months, or go through Yale - we went through Yale and had to foot that bill as well - just the Child Study center bill was around $1,000. Much of the other testing was done before that when we had Husky and my son's bills were covered (thank goodness, cuz he had all sorts of blood work and an MRI and stuff at Yale Children's hospital. I'm sure those bills were very high. If you want to e-mail me privately, I can share more if you would like - good luck to you with whomever you choose. > > Anyone have suggestions for doctor in Connecticut that specializes in > Autism Spectrum Disorders. Guest guest
You could also go see CC McCarton in NYC at The McCarton Center. She is the other well known person in the tri-state area. I think her wait is around 3 months as opposed to Yale's extensive waiting time. And I think her fee is similar to the $2,500. at Mayville's with a school visit. I know Dr. McCarton will not go to the school herself though to observe the child at school, there is another person that does the school visits. For me, I went with Mayville because I wanted the evaluator to also be the one that went to the school. I liked the idea that he saw my child during testing and the classroom setting- both. Best wishes.
