I had my 12 year old HFA son, give candy to a 12 year old school friend at the local nursery where she works with her parents, as I am hoping she will marry him someday and take care of him and I can retire from that job. She has taken interest in our son in the past when he was still at school. We prepped him tremendously, got him looking all spiffy, and since he has relatively few inhibitions, he had no problems going along with this female constructed plan. His 9 year old higher functioning aspie sister, my husband and myself quizzed him on what he would say when he handed her the candy on Valentines day. In other words "Happy Valentines Day" instead of "Do you have anything electronic that is broken." We made sure his sister checked out his attire, etc. It was all in a half joking fashion at our house, but we got him all ready for anything..... i.e. "talk about things that interest HER" and as his sister put it, "Don't talk about anything 'electronical'". Ask about her dog, ask about the plants at the nursery, don't talk on and on AT her......

So, he goes, it all goes great, she is totally appropriate, etc. Then, her mom prompts her to offer him a tiny potted flower plant. She walks with him to the flowers and asks him which one he would like. He replies excitedly "which ones can I eat????!!!" He has a thing about "snacking" at the nursery.. (rose hips, pine bark, etc.) I just about died! I laughed and told her "Tatiana, whenever Calvin eats a flower, he will think fondly of you..... "

I told him that we were going to tell his sister what he did. The sister just about died laughing also, since we thought we prepared him for any possible social occurrence. His sister won't let him come to her school when I pick her up, as the last time I did we "lost" him in the commotion. We found him a few minutes later munching on a potted plant in the walkway that was growing in a barrel.

Never a dull moment around here.
