Yesterday the consultant came from project access. I must say this is probrably the most important and the best thing that has happened to my child. This person came and observed and met with the staff afer and then with me. The consultant has wonderful suggestions and the most important- she gave the staff knowledge. The teachers were just positive that he needed to have a psych evaluation, she assured them that he is just a normal autistic child. She put him on a point system. He will earn pts for prizes. He is given a schedule for the day for visual, but not given the whole schedule for the day but just for half day at a time. When the morning is over the day starts over for the point system. The consultant told them to never hold a grudge and always be calmly in charge. She told them these kids act out for a reason. thier job is to find the reason. He will have a sensory break every 15 min throughout the day. Consultant told them sensory and

punishment are not connected. The teachers can take things away that are enjoyable to him, such as eating lunch with his peers, but never take away recess. If he is being aggressive in the classroom remove the whole class not him because it causes a bigger rukus(we have open classrooms). He will be put in a room with just his aid and be slowly introduced in small amounts to other activities and eventually to the classroom. I am sorry to be rambling but I am so excited. I am hoping to get a speaker into the school for awareness. The principal was equally excited because these techniques can be used on other kids not just the ones with autism. I am sure I will be adding more as I remember them. Lori
