Guest guest
Yes, in preschool, K it was anxiety, in first grade it was OCD. And then after a very extensive neuropyschological test it was AS. And now I am sure it is AS with emotional regulation disorder. In our case the AS has to be the focus of treatment. These kids don't respond to treatment for emotional issues in the way someone without AS would. It has taken me a few years to understand AS better. I had such a shallow idea of the problem and the treatment. Try to find someone that truely has an AS practice and not just a mixed bag. IF your child has emotional issues too. Look harder for a behaviorist that has dealt extensively with this kind of patient it will well be worth the effort. Pam
Guest guest
Yes, my son was thought to be ADD by his pediatrician and a Psycologist when he was 4 years old. We then had him evaluated by a Child Developement Center and the Psychiatrist was toying with the posiblity of Tourettes because it runs in my family. When he turned 6 we had Neuropsycological testing done and he was dx PDD-NOS/Mild Aspergers. I do think that it is fairly common for the dianosis to change. When they are little the social problems are not usually noticed as most kids only parallel play when they are young. It is not until they are noticably behind their peers that it is clear that ADHD is not the problem or not only the problem. Guest guest
We have just been dealing with this in preparation for IEP meetings with our public school. The pediatrician wanted to give our dd a dx of ADHD and we told her that no one who has actually done testing of our kid, or who has taught our kid, thinks that ADHD is a correct DX. We told her that we think she is a dead on fit for Aspergers and she said that she didn't think so, but that she was fitting a PDD NOS dx. Which to me just is a catch-all if there is one symptom that just doesn't fit. (my dd doesn't flap...although she does do plenty of other stimming behaviors: spinning mostly and other tics). So we are fine with the PDD NOS dx, but since there is no difference in treatment of either PDD NOS or AS, it seems pretty arbitrary. > > Did any parents find that doctors tried to diagnose their child with different behavioral conditions, such as bipolar or ADHD, prior to the Asperger's Syndrome? >
Guest guest
All I add my two cents in here. We not only had doctors trying to dx our son with everything under the son, but everyone at school too. I think everyone clasped onto an aspect of autism that they saw. Everyone had a different idea of what " it " was. This eventually forced us to go get a neuropsych eval on our own time and dime to end all the armchair psychologizing. Guest guest
yes, of course. because of anxiety and OCD and rituals, the child becomes explosive and hyper and difficult. As a mother, I know what asperger's is because I already have 1 diagnosed kid so with the second, I just went for confirmation. After they hear the A word, they suddenly agree. Guest guest
You should see a psychiatrist or dev doc and have an evaluation done to figure out what dx she has. Then you would at least know how to approach the problems she has. Roxanna The government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases:If it moves, tax it.
