Guest guest
Hi guys We live in South Africa. Our son, aged 3 years 8 months was diagnosed with autism over the past few weeks (final eval 4 March). Eventhough he is not HFA according to his CARS score, he is just off the HFA side, and thus not severely affected. He has speech, although very stereotypical, and likes to interact and play with adults and his baby sister (1yr4 months). The question I have concerns his adult future. We have found a wonderful group of people at the Unica school for autism, so for now we are in good hands. What concerns us is the future possibilities. We have been told that there is no real formal " plan " for adults with autism where we live. We would like for to one day be trained or helped to do something that he's good at and be employed in that field. We are realistic and realise that he might not become a doctor or engineer, but would still like him to experience some kind of job satisfaction. He already shows pride in what he does. We have heard that in the UK and Aus there are specific groups of people who train and employ or help with employment of adults with ASD. Can any of you tell us a little bit more about that? And perhaps also about the facilities available for ASD kids in these countries. We want what is best for , not only for today, but for all his possible tomorows. Regards Mirinda van Schoor. PS Thank you for this wonderful group! We have already learnt so much!
