Guest guest
My son is 5 and on the autistic spectrum. I beginning to suspect he has Aspergers since he is very verbal. He also is very fixated on the Train. He knows all the characters and talks non stop about anything train related. I know there are so many types of doctors out there nurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, behavior developmental doctors, etc... Which kind of professional would be best? Can the school district test for Aspergers (my son is due for his three year evaluation this spring)?
Guest guest
I would have your child see an occupational therapist and a psychologist who specializes in child behaviors. My big regret when Dylan was younger was not figuring out a way to pay for the occupational specialist who had a plan to help with his sensory issues. We went a few times and then realized our insurance wouldn't cover that type of intervention and I couldn't afford $85 per week at the time so we abandoned it. Once he was tested in the schools, they labeled him as ADHD, speech delay, and to look for a possible PDD diagnosis as he got older. But Asperger's wasn't diagnosed until last Fall. I never went back to the sensory issues particularly, but we followed through on some of the things we learned originally from the occupational therapist (she had things for us to do at home in addition to what she was planning on doing with him at the clinic.) Plus, even without the diagnosis of Aspergers, we knew he had sensory issues so we intervened in ways that made sense to us. We also took him to a psychologist who specialized in behavior and play therapy with kids when he started on medication for ADHD. This lady was a godsend! She spent the first part of the time with my son and the second half of the time w/ me, helping me learn how to effectively parent Dylan. We saw her for about 2.5 years. Can't say enough how much it helped. I had always read that medication alone isn't going to effectively help a child so I knew we needed counseling/therapy/intervention of some sort. And our insurance covered it. - woo-hoo! The school district should be able to test for Aspergers. Depending on what they find, you'll still need to have your son diagnosed by someone in the medical field so he can get additional interventions covered by your insurance (assuming you're fortunate enough to have it.) I bet the Occupational Therapy denied for my son 7-8 years ago is probably covered today. Good luck!!! ( ) Which professionals are used to diagnose aspergers My son is 5 and on the autistic spectrum. Guest guest
Schools are, correct me if I am wrong here---NO SUPPOSED to diagnose----in fact, you want someone outside of the school to do it; if schools find and diagnose, they have to pay and provide the services then, so I would suggest that it not come from the school, actually; I am sure others will agree with that....most of us complain because the school is trying to tell us when they don't have that right!! So, just FYI. Ruthie Dolezal ( ) Which professionals are used to diagnose aspergers My son is 5 and on the autistic spectrum. I beginning to suspect he has Aspergers since he is very verbal. Guest guest
My son is tested at school every other year (if I remember correctly.) The last time, I specifically asked that he be tested for Aspergers (on top of the other tests) and that's when he received the Aspergers diagnosis. So the school had a big part in it. Now, my insurance won't recognize the school testing b/c a medical professional wasn't involved (a doctoral candidate of psychology did it) so I still have to go through the medical channel (primary care physician) to have an "official" diagnosis on my son's medical chart. I provide my son's medical team with the school testing and vice versa though so everyone is aware of what's going on. Guest guest
My pediatrician told me that a developmental pediatrician is the one to see for a diagnosis. My daugher is 2.5 years old, and we have an appointment in APRIL...that's how long the wait is to see one over here! Apparently there are way more referrals than developmental peds here in the Atlanta area, so that's why there is such a long wait...not sure if that's in most cities, too.
