Guest guest
I think we talked about this in the past, but I just thought I'd mention it.... Autism the Musical is playing now on HBO. I watched it the other night. Found it to be informative and touching. We also have the On Demand service with our digital cable. It's On Demand and there is also another selection with out takes from the movie. It's a shame the out takes couldn't be included, because they gave another dimension of the issues, but I suppose they had to cut somewhere. Guest guest
Mims, thanks !! I was looking for it on HBO last night and I didn't see it. I wonder if it was on only for that one day. I check it out again today. RoseMims Batts <mimsnj@...> wrote: Rose, I think it should be fine for the whole family to see. I made it a point to watch it with my son. The other posting gives a good review of the film. The only problem I could possibly forsee is if a child isn't accepting or has a hard time seeing the kids in the film. I know early on, my son absolutely hated to hear himself on tape or in pictures. I really wondered how to tell him when we finally had a diagnosis. I was afraid that he would see himself as "broken" or that he would label himself or be upset. Like all you Momma and Poppa Bears, I'd do anything to protect my cub! The film does cover a wide assortment of families and children. They all have their own issues and come from all walks of life. The film is mainly about how the program developed and the work that went into practicing and preparing for "The Musical." It does end with bits and pieces of the actual performance. The film started out telling the story of a woman who married, wanted children, adopted from Russia. As time went by, she noticed something different about her son. Her husband divorced her. She admitted that she had become devoted to her son and his needs. She went to school for a degree that would allow her to work with Autistic kids thru movement. From there, she got the idea for the kids to put on a play. I feel it was well done. It kept you hanging in there, anxious to see how it all would turn out. I hope it reaches out to families with kids on the spectrum... to let people know we're not alone and our kids can grow, advance and enjoy themselves. I hope it reaches out to "outsiders" to educate them and to help them be more tolerant or people who are different and more compassionate. I hope it also reaches the legislators, employers, doctors, and insurance companies! (Go ahead.... call me a dreamer!) The out takes that I watched On Demand were very good too. I wonder whether they are included on the DVD as an extra? I really hope they are. Mims Rose <beachbodytan2002 > wrote: Mims, do you recommend this for the whole family? Guest guest
Rose I checked and it is on Monday and Tuesday in my area. We get several HBO channels on our cable service. I'm not sure which one/ones you get. Here's the link from HBO website: http://www.hbo.com/apps/schedule/ScheduleServlet?ACTION_DETAIL=DETAIL & FOCUS_ID=647488 from the HBO site: AUTISM: THE MUSICAL > HBO DOCUMENTARIES WEBSITE > HBO DOCUMENTARIES CLIPS Rated TV14: ADULT LANGUAGE Running Time: 94 minutes Genre: Documentary Inspired by her work with her own autistic son, Elaine Hall decided to create a musical theater program that allows autistic children to express themselves creatively and interact socially. The result was the Miracle Project. Countering the bleak statistics regarding autism (one out of 150 children are diagnosed in the U.S.), the California woman pledged to lead a group of autistic kids in defying expectations by writing, rehearsing and performing their own full-length musical. This film follows five Los Angeles children and their families over the course of six months and observes how this musical production gives these young performers a comfort zone in which they can explore their creative sides.
