Now, I'm talking about the official medical dx. Schools, not beingmedical professionals, who knows? Yes, they have some guidelines tofollow, but you know the saying "a little learning is dangerous" (orsomething like that).they call them the armature doctors *smile* r_woman2 <me2ruth@...> wrote: >> I forget who just posted and said to me that from reading my posts > they think my son is autistic or HFA more so than aspherger. I ask because HFA isnot an official dx. Also, technically, one cannot go from beingautistic to being Asperger. Part of the official dx of the two referto whether one had a speech delay

or not. If "yes" then one isautistic (assuming one meets the diagnostic criteria) if "no" then onecould be Asperger (if one meets the rest of the diagnostic criteria).I think it is safe to assume your son is a high-functioning autisticrather than Asperger. An autistic person may improve to the pointwhere he appears to be Asperger, but he is technically still autisticand always will be. People don't change from one dx to the other--thedx is being changed because someone realizes that the first one wasincorrect. Now, I'm talking about the official medical dx. , I feel like slapping that man for ya. Yeah for Collin !!!! that is so sweet to hear how he stuck up for you .... how impressing is that !... . Rosegina <ginak1117@...> wrote: Hey Ruth/Rose-just kidding LOLTo tell ya the truth ruth I believe he was dx both times with the different dx's by a psychologist and the other a psychiatrist but I think where the difference is comming from is the age he was seen at by the different docs. The first one

said autisim and the second said aspherger. I know you cant cure autisim but do you think that due to early intervention it could change the dx from one to the other???? He saw the first doctor at 3 but I was also told by this doc that he truley couldnt be dx with autisim until the age of 5, again who knows if this is a true statement. Im begining to feel like I have been told alot of misleading statements. We were in the military when collin was born and Im sorry to say this and I hope I dont offend anyone but I just dont think that collin got the best of care from the military doctors. It seems like once we came back to Michigan and saw regular docs we started getting the help we needed. He was 5 and a half when the psychiatrist here did the testing and evalutations and said he had aspherger and that is what I go by but he also sees a psychologist and a social worker and an behavorial therapist besides everyone he

sees at school and his social worker has reffered to him as HFA, so that is why I thought they were the same. Who Knows, I guess like you said as long as he is getting the treatment he needs and is doing good and I do believe that the early intervention was a life saver, I think things could have been alot worse. When he started school and they did his IEP they said he didnt qualify for anything and they said that by looking at him and the testing they did that they didnt believe he had anything wrong with him, but because I had the dx from his phsychiatrist they treated him by what the doc said. If I didnt have that they would not of helped us. Now over the 5 years he has been there and they got to know him and they have seen him in action they know his dx is true, but at first they thought he was normal. They told me that if they were told to go into his room and pick out the one child with AS that they would never of

picked him, I said how could you its not written on his forhead. I guess they think that he is suppose to look different or something, and because he doesnt there is nothing wrong wiht him. I get that fromm people with my rhumatoid arthritis. I have a hadicap parking permit bacause it is hard for me to walk long distances somedays, but I look normal HEE HEE, so no one knows Im as sick as I am and one day this elderly gentleman came up to me and said that I should be ashamed of myself for parking in a handicap parking spot and using someone elses permit. I was just getting out of my car and getting something out of my trunk to return it and I had collin with me so the man didnt see me walking or anything and not that I always walk with a limp unless Im haveing a bad day but any way he said that to me and I was so offended and I told him it wasnt any of his business but that I was on disability due to RA and he didnt

seem to care and I was crying and collin said ya you ass hole my mom is sick.Ha ha That was one of the only times I didnt yell at him for swearing.LOL Some people are ignorant and I guess my point to this long story is that if you cant see our handicap then people see you as normal. -- In , "r_woman2" <me2ruth@...> wrote:>> > >> > I forget who just posted and said to me that from reading my posts > > they think my son is autistic or HFA more so than aspherger. Hi ,

Hyperlexia is the opposite of dyslexia really - a precocious ability to read at an early age but it also comes with speech delay. Also there is usually a problem with reading comprehension. You can read more about it here --> http://www.hyperlexia.org/ Some people think it happens separate from autism but I tend to think it's a splinter skill that can happen and is part of autism. But either way, sounds to me as if your ds definitely has hyperlexia.

I have heard of this happening before - my 11 yo ds (hfa) is also hyperlexic.

RoxannaYou're UniqueJust like everyone else...

Hey roxanne, thanks for your post. I have heard of dyslexia but not hyperlexia what is this?? and yes he was reading at a third grade level in preschool how strange is that. It is wierd how he didnt talk till almost 4 and once his speech therapist got through to him it is like they say a door opened up and he was on a roll. It was unbelieveable, it was like he was trying to catch up on lost time LOL. thanks, ginaP.S. Have you ever heard of this happening before???????
