My best (or worst) shoe story is when we found a pair of slip ons he really liked and the special ed teacher told him he had to wear sneakers to "fit in". Aaargh!

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You bet we understand. My son learned when he was 5 but hasn't done it since. He winds then around until there is a knot and that's how they stay,,,,,,,,,forever. We got him a pair of tennies that he liked honestly about 1 1/2 years ago. They were large.. I know,,,,,bad,,,,,,but he loved them and so we got them. He's still in them and they are really sad. It's time for new ones,,,,,but now we can't find them. I even got online to see if we could find them. I've searched for some "just like them"......he's saying that they're fine for him forever. Ugh. We've gone and tried on different ones,,,,,,,but none of them ever "feel right". I even bought a pair once, brought it home,,,,,,,,,bent it up to "soften" it...and now my other son wears them because Ian said they didnt' feel right. Anybody

else have this problem?Robincindytens <cindten@...> wrote: This is the only place I can post this and recieve understanding and also give hope. Robin, It's so hard finding sneakers for my son. I let him pick out the style himself. then we look for the size. "ANYTHING" I put on his feet, he's so excited, loves them, and says they are great!!!. ya know how long it took me to figure out that "there great" doesn't mean they fit. if the toes touch the tips of the sneaker, ' it fits', because his foot is in the sneaker, if its too big, 'it fits', because his foot is in the sneaker. the outcome, his sneakers look so old in less than one week. in one week, my son is ready for new sneakers. I would have to ask, can you bend your toes. well, no matter how tight that sneaker is, he will try really hard to bend his toe and say he can. not just because he wants that style so bad, because he can - bend his toes - and answered my question. "yes". I will have him try on 3 different sizes and say, which feels better?. he has an

unusual answer for each sneaker. (but not answering my question to, which feels better). if the sneakers are too narrow. He doesn't tell me they hurt. I will know after a few days and see sneaker marks on his feet. I would have to ask my question different. I would have to say, "does the sneakers feel like they are hugging your feet to tight"?. do they feel to long, like you feet are sliding?, etc... and maybe, we can find the right sneaker that way. it's just by chance if we do. so when we are at the store trying on sneakers. I have to have a list of questions ready to ask him to figure out if these are the right ones. because just asking how do they feel? or do they fit? aren't the right questions for him. As for tying them. He has his own special way that only he does. I've never seen anyone tie a sneaker like him. not in person or on the net. once tied, they stay

tied forever. He will just slip his foot into them each day, like a slipper. if they come untied, that's how they will stay until someone tells him to tie his sneakers. LOL so my son is opposite of yours, they all feel just fine. and/or Robin Lemke <jrisjs@...> wrote: Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You bet we understand. I have been amused and amazed by these

posts on tying or buying shoes. Guess I really didn’t realize how

common this problem was among our Aspies. My 17 yo son reminds me of

Robin’s in that he ties his shoes one time in this really weird looking “series”

of knots – and then just slips his feet in them for the remaining life of

the shoe. When he was younger he only wore one brand, one style, one

color of tennis shoes – I think they were Van’s. He was also

a little like Rose’s son regarding the size so I would just have to get

down on the floor and “feel” for the toes, the width, etc. Of

course, during the years that he only wore Van’s we just had to worry

about the length!

Robin,

It's so hard finding sneakers for my son. I let him pick out the

style himself. then we look for the size. " ANYTHING " I

put on his feet, he's so excited, loves them, and says they are great!!!.

ya know how long it took me to figure out that " there great " doesn't

mean they fit. if the toes touch the tips of the sneaker, ' it

fits', because his foot is in the sneaker, if its too big, 'it fits', because

his foot is in the sneaker. the outcome, his sneakers look so old in less

than one week. in one week, my son is ready for new sneakers.

I would have to ask, can you bend your toes. well, no matter how tight that

sneaker is, he will try really hard to bend his toe and say he can. not

just because he wants that style so bad, because he can - bend his toes - and

answered my question. " yes " . I will have him try on 3

different sizes and say, which feels better?. he has an

unusual answer for each sneaker. (but not answering my question to,

which feels better). if the sneakers are too narrow. He

doesn't tell me they hurt. I will know after a few days and see sneaker

marks on his feet. I would have to ask my question different. I

would have to say, " does the sneakers feel like they are hugging your feet

to tight " ?. do they feel to long, like you feet are sliding?, etc...

and maybe, we can find the right sneaker that way. it's just by chance if

we do. so when we are at the store trying on sneakers. I have to have a

list of questions ready to ask him to figure out if these are the right

ones. because just asking how do they feel? or do they fit? aren't the right

questions for him. As for tying them. He has his own special way

that only he does. I've never seen anyone tie a sneaker like him. not

in person or on the net. once tied, they stay tied forever. He will

just slip his foot into them each day, like a slipper. if they come

sneakers. LOL so my son is opposite of yours, they all feel just fine.

Isn't it funny how the "little" things can seem like the BIGGEST accomplishments ever??? The first time Dylan truly blew his nose, was like a beautiful song to me. I can count on one hand how many times he's done it since then (he'll act like he's trying, but I know he's really not), but he did it so I know he's capable. Ironically, his little sister (she's 6, Dylan is 11) has been able to blow her nose since she was probably 2. Strangely early. Probably heard me begging Dylan to try so much she decided she could do it herself!

So I'm not the only one whose child doesn't blow their nose! I'll take all the little accomplishments I can get. They do seem pretty big. Last year my 6 year old managed to start putting his own socks on without help. I was thrilled.

that's similar to the concern we're having. but with Jean's (pants) instead of sneakers. My son likes to, and only wears sweat pants. the pull up kind. because he doesn't like to snap, button or zipper the jeans. Also, the way his body is build (large) jeans don't look 'neat' on him, they slide down as if they were too big, which they aren't, and they are just not him. but T.G., in his classroom, most boys wear sweat pants. now at another school, not to far from us. 'all kids wear jean's'. so he would stand out wearing sweat pants all the time. and that would be a Hugh problem for him. I do try to dress up his clothes with nice tops & matching tops to go with the sweat pants to keep the eyes more focused on his shirts and less on the pants. What grade is your son in? if Elementary school, could you dress up the 'slip on's', to have something

cool looking on them, to take the focus off the slip on style? IMO, I wouldn't mind if all public schools wore uniforms. then no one would have to compete with the latest style jeans, top brand sneakers etc...jmckim4184@... wrote: My best (or worst) shoe story is when we found a pair of slip ons he really liked and the special ed teacher told him he had to wear sneakers to "fit in". We had school uniforms for a while in our public school. It was horrible. The shirts were "itchy," and the pants were hated. but did your son care what the sp ed teacher said? my now 11 yo

aspie daughter cares only that her clothes and shoes are

comfortable. she does not care what other people say about her

apparel. she wears ONLY crocs on her feet, summer or winter. she

did have to wear pumas for cross country, but only put them on for

running and took them off immediately after. she had a favorite pair

of tennis shoe mary janes in kindergarten that she wore everyday

without socks. her feet and shoes smelled awful and the rule was she

had to remove her shoes outside and rinse her feet off, otherwise the

whole house smelled. how could such a tiny little girl create such

smells is beyond me.

Our son could not blow his nose until starting O.T.; now he does---he is six; of course, at five, his O.T. taught him to tie his shoes; we had done everything to teach him but it took HER to do it----but, he does it---and, we tell everyone she did so that is cool!!!! Ruthie

That is incredible!! What a blessing! And, how sweet that someone would do that for a 6 foot 3 guy; we would all do that though!! But, how adorable, and thank GOD!!! It IS a miracle isn't it??? It IS such a hard thing to learn though, and horrible to try to write it / directions on how to do it; I had to do that as an assignment once, and that is as hard as your son probably thought it was to learn to actually tie them!!! CONGRATULATIONS... bravo!!!! YIPPEY!!! That is exciting.

Allan is in his 13th year. He graduated from high school last year, but we did not pick up his diploma so he is eligible for a sheltered workplace program. They wouldn't care now if he wears shoes not sneakers but they have to be neat and he has to wear socks (don't ask). The shoes issues were in high school with a special ed teacher and aide who were very concerned about his appearance. We were just trying to get through the day :)

I think you're talking about my house! Hee Hee!!! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one with a house like this! My brother complains every time he comes over.

has a list of chores that she is supposed to do and so do I. Saturday is our cleaning day but we never get everything done. We are having work done on our house - just had new siding put up and a new roof, new doors - and then work will start on the inside. I don't know where to put all this stuff! My brother said to throw it all out! Of course, I can't, but once all the work is done, I will have three additional rooms, so that will help.

Then I feel better and realize that some day they will all leave home and we'll go back to having it clean and uncluttered. HA!

has always been that way, too! I guess because she's hyperactive. She used to throw all of her garbage on the floor, but thank goodness, does not do that any more! But she lays on the couch after school and draws pictures and stuff, and drops everything in front of the couch. Instead of putting her stuff inside the toy box, she puts everything on top of it. Her clothes she will drop in whichever room she is in at the time. If she finds an empty box, she will fill it with stuff! LOL!! She makes me crazy!

Especially because our house is a mess mainly due to Allan's obsessive looking for things- he tends to throw everything all over, not to mention the things he has broken.

Dear Meleah,

That's wonderful news. Congratulations! Thank you for standing up and fighting

for reimbursement. I know it was not easy and I know it took a lot of time and

effort and money.

You're right, not only will this help you, but countless more, as well, as this

decision has set a precedent which the state must follow for others as well!

That's great.

Has the judge's decision been posted on the web? It would be useful for others,

not only in N.C., but for attorneys pursuing similar cases in other states as

well. ? Can you post the decision, or have you, to the website?

Thanks in advance.

Best wishes,

, MD

Dear all,

Yesterday was the deadline for the state of North Carolina to appeal the

decision made by the judge on October 28th that they must reemberse us for

the expenses of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for our children. Our attorney

just notified me that the Asst. DA for the state called to say that they

have not appealed. The state will be reembersing us for those expenses last

spring. Praise God!

This is not just a victory for us in the short term of finances. This

judge's decision that now stands will aid so many other children who can

benefit from this treatment, and will also aid us in further treatments

needed for the children.

Our neurologist has already submitted a new request for more treatment, and

is waiting for the state to give consent for coverage. If by chance the

state should decide to deny coverage, we have already proven the need, and

it should be a quick and simple hearing with the judge. We are praying, of

course, that this won't even be necessary. We pray that the state will

agree to coverage based on the medical necessity already established, and

hope to begin the next set of treatments in the early part of January.

I can't thank everyone enough for their prayers and encouragement and

support over the past couple of years in dealing with this issue among

others with the children's health.

I hope this will also open the door to some other treatments that we have

found extremely benefitial for the kids as far as state coverage goes. As

most of you are aware, the out of pocket expense for these medical

treatments quickly adds up and is very difficult for our family. Let's

continue to pray that the state will cover those things which we have found

are so essential to the improvement of their health. Thank you all so much.
