my son doesnt talk to himself in mirror but the other toys blanket snacks extra clothes i am right there with you but anymore extra shoes is a necessity because sure as there is water or mud my 11 yr old AS son will definitely find his ways to it up to his knees almost always. sherryFrom: lori jennings <lozzy3us@...> Sent: Wednesday, May 20, 2009 5:51:32 PMSubject: ( ) funny things our kids do!

Okay I have to admit, I need a break from the seriousness of life. As parents of AS kids I feel like I am too dramatic about everything, so I thought it might be fun to share some funny things our kids do that only we understand and giggle about!

My 10 yr old AS child will absolutely go out of his way to have a conversation with himself while talking in a mirrored image. He doesn't care if it is a store window or the mirror in his room. He can't hardly get his teeth brushed without further instruction because of the medecine cabinet mirror.Hee Hee!

I am going to need a good giggle tonight. I am headed to a tee ball game and to my 16 yr old's game. I am armed with extra clothes, snacks, coats, blankets and toys and oh yeah the old stand by-movies for the car dvd player!

Wish me luck!!

My son who is 10 likes to look at himself when he talks to us. He likes to see what his facial expressions look like I guess, strange. Other than that he doesn't look at a mirror-not to even see if he has food on his face before going out. I wondered if other kids did this.

My son loves to see images of himself and has to dance and laugh in front of mirrors or if there is a security camera in a store with the monitor right there. It's better now than when he was younger. But, it looks a whole lot weirder at age 12 than at 5.I told a story on another thread that I don't know if anyone even noticed so I'll tell it again. just started playing little league. They are required to wear a cup/athletic supporter. hasn't ever worn one before so he's fascinated by it. Unfortunately, it has caused him to remember a quote from Craig Ferguson (late late show). Craig once was pretending to write a letter to Barry Bonds (baseball player) telling him not to take steroids because they can make a guy's testicles shrink "to the size of raisins". Then Craig said that of course HE can take them because his testicles are so huge that he needs to take them to

shrink his to the size of a man's head. Wouldn't' you know would walk into the room at that moment. I'd forgotten about this. It was at least 2 years ago and hasn't mentioned it in ages. But he remember it when he put on the cup. "Mom, my testicles feel like they're the size of a man's head." Of course most 12 year olds would rather not talk about such things to mom. Anyway, then during practice decided to test out the protectiveness of the cup by punching it. Whee. Apparently, he's not the first kid to do that. But by age 12, again, most wouldn't.Anyway, that's the only funny story I have the strength to tell at the moment. Gotta get the kiddos to school.Miriam>> Okay I have to admit, I need a break from the seriousness of life. Cute Miriam, thanks for giving me a smile!

Funny, my 13 year old son is so unlike his brothers regards to the topic of sex.

I have tried to be quite open and frank in hopes of allowing open discussion and

education because in this day and age I want them to be well aware of the

related consequences. My other sons are typically closed to conversation, " Yeah,

mom, I know " , the usual response. However, the 13 year old will crack jokes that

cause even me to blush!* lol I find it kinda refreshing that he is so open to

discussion because I do worry about him - as he is the 'spectrumy' one - and so

I am glad that he will talk with me so freely. : )

*Once, I was told about " morning wood! " = p

i have the same situation only with girls. i have tried to be more open about

the sex talk, but my oldest would turn off. even now at 19, she can barely

speak to me about such things. my 12 yo aspie on the other hand, can't talk

enough about it. she has spoken to me about things that have made me cringe (my

inside only) and wants to speak of them down to the last detail. it is

refreshingly honest and open, but i have had to adjust.

My 10 year old is starting to get close to needing the sex talk. In fact I

think that in school next year they will have the seperate Boy and Girl sex

education talks. Well, I have just been putting it off. He is so open about

things, but not just with me. I'm afraid once we do have the sex talk that he

will end up talking to the whole class and any adult around about it, let alone

my 7 year old daughter. After he had a surgery last year to remove one of his

testicles, I was so scared to send him back to school. I just made sure to go

and tell all of his teachers not to even ask about it. He already talks about

how insects mate. How he has missed the point about humans, I just don't know.

How have the rest of you given the sex talk while not being concerned they will

talk about it all the time to everyone?

Anyway, about funny stories. Yes, my 10 year old son still believes in Santa,

the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, etc. In fact, since we read a book about

fairies, he believes all fairies live in London, and fly here if necessary. Oh,

man. I just can't bring myself to tell him otherwise. It has to do with that

sharing things with everyone thing. Once he knows, my other children will know,

too. When he does find out, will he hate us for lying to him, or what?

Anyway, my funny story was that one night I forgot that his tooth came out, and

he got no money. He was so concerned that since the cat was in his room, she

might have eaten the fairy. Well, while he was at school, I took a pencil with

a really fine point and wrote as tiny as I could that the tooth fairy was a new

fairy and lost her way, but now she found our house and could leave the money.

Well, he was so excited about the note. He just " knew a regular person couldn't

have written so tiny " . But he was still concerned that the cat must have eaten

the other tooth fairy. So any time he loses a tooth, he shuts the cat out of

his room.

dear maryahmaki:

i saw an oprah recently that discusses when and how to talk to your children

about sex. it was quite good and i believe there was even a handout and

diagrams available on her website. go to this link if your interested:

http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahshow/20090326-tows-talking-to-kids-about-sex-h\

andbook

as i mentioned earlier, i have had this talk with my youngest so didn't use the

handouts offered.

you said you were concerned about your son talking to everyone about what he had

learned. is this because he is anxious to share new information? he can keep a

secret, just as he did after his surgery, perhaps if you use the same

logic....some things are private and shouldn't be talked about with his school

mates. furthermore if he did speak about it at school, it could get him into

trouble, if it came across as inappropriate.

i love that your son believes in fairies. this was always a favorite topic of

my daughters. she too believed in fairies. i don't know if she still does

believe, as i haven't asked her about it lately. her and i have always been

truthful with each other. EXCEPT i told her there was a santa, easter bunny and

tooth fairy. when she was in 3rf or 4th grade, the kids at school had told her

there was no santa, that parents just buy the gifts and say they are from santa.

she asked me if i buy her gifts and say they are from santa? i felt it was time

to tell her the truth, that it was me and her father. she was more crushed that

i had lied to her than finding out there was no santa. even though i knew

someday she would understand, it was tough to see the disappointment in her

face. so i know how you feel about them finding out the truth.

i am impressed with your creative solution to the tooth fairy getting lost. and

the tiny note was a nice touch.

regards, melody

oh my gosh, that was so cute... I am sitting here just a-giggling!!

you are quite inventive!!

reminds me of how the tooth fairy/Easter bunny/Santa utilizes a black felt

tipped marker for their rounds at our house ; )

once, that darn tooth fairy had a real dilemma on her hands: my nt son dropped

the tooth down the drain and was devestated she would not come! well, while son

slept, the tooth fairy managed to pull apart the sink trap (she, too, is

creative!) and lo'n behold, that tooth was still there, phew!

as our children have gotten older, we have taken each aside and explained the

importance of keeping magic alive for littler ones. they have all been very

good! including, our son who is spectrumy... his turn just arose (at age 12!!)

and he was initially taken aback, but as we share with all the kids: the spirit

is not a lie... there, indeed, are Santas in the world who keep the tradition

alive and now, he too can be an important maintainer of the spirit of giving. :

)

(besides, in the words of my eldest son: 'we still get gifts from santa, won't

we??' lol yup, i think we can manage a trinket or two. : )

That is a great story!

I completely understand about the santa claus thing. I know that the minute

s knows for sure that santa isn't real that he will use that information

as a weapon to hurt his sisters the first time he gets mad.

We have had to really lock down the computer and tv because s has no

filters regarding what is appropriate. He managed to watch the " Family Guy "

cartoon for a while and ended up asking one of his day care teachers if he was

going to have sex with his girlfriend. So now parental controls are our friend!

Thanks Melody. I'll have to look up this site. Maybe it would help to tell him

that he could get into trouble at school by talking about this, and maybe he

should just talk to me at home about any questions or comments. Thanks for not

thinking I'm an awful mom for not telling him the truth. I just wait while

cringing for the ball to drop. When I was a kid and teenager my parents never

told us different. They would just make little comments like " Santa doesn't

bring toys to kids who don't believe in him " , etc. I remember getting presents

from Santa for as long as I lived there. I'm not sure when I found out. But we

never talked about it.
